    Eurocentrism Appreciation!

NO, this thread is not facetious. In order to ease whatever tensions exist between New Worlders/Old Worlders, I thought it would be a good idea for people to list those aspects of Eurocentrism that they appreciate the most! Aspects of Eurocentrism are manifestations of European influence that have helped to make Europe the central focus of the globe over the centuries. It can be anything, ranging from political ideologies to fashion products. In short, anything that has contributed to the fixation with Europe and its position relative to the rest of the world. Post as many examples as you like. As a humble New Worlder, I'd like to contribute at least a few right now:

    (1) European sculpture: the techniques were perfected in the Old World, and the works by the best European masters will remain the epitome of greatness for MANY centuries to come. I would say Bernini is my favorite sculptor.

    (2) Industrialization: thank you, Britain!

    (3) Small cars: there's little possibility of this trend taking hold in the US, but I find the trend in car size to be quite amusing. Of course it's stimulated in large part by economic/ecological necessity, but it' still interesting nonetheless.

My language and The Law. Thousands of years worth of wisdom. Anyway, it's summed up in most everything we know.

I realllly appreciate it when Europeans describe their situations and viewpoints so that I may first learn, then understand.

    1. The concept of Law, as opposed to raw power, as the basis for society.

    2. Technology: other than paper and gunpowder (thanks, China!), every other useful thing has come from Europe or a Europe-founded nation.

    3. Literature: someone once said, long ago, that a single shelf of mediocre thirteenth century Italian poets was greater than all of the national literatures of all non-European nations combined (I don't remember who said it). When was the last time you were awed by the power and majesty of the words of a non-European? Right. Me too.

    The list goes on!

Laws are also based on raw power.

Europe is Imperatrix Mundi because it started to develop together with other great ancient non-European civilisations, but while all these civilisations died, Europe managed to survive. In that way Europe achieved a valuable treasure called "experience", and that means that they commited all the mistakes you can think of before any other region in this planet, so they know how to solve it. The European is a very curious human being, so he observes others' mistakes and learns from them.
We New Worlders are simply commiting the same mistakes Europe comitted long time ago. It's the same like sons leaving their parent's house.

If I had to put my appreciation it would be: European ADN, we have it in every cell

Well, that was the point, no? In primitive societies, raw power is the only source of power, while in modern societies, the rule of law places all men on an equal footing (yes, yes, we all can cite abuses, but it does not detract from the fact that Law is now the rule, rather than the exception). This is an entirely European concept, forged in Athens, Venice, the Northern Renaissence, the Enlightenment, the American and French Revolutions, the tumult of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. If not for this concept, we'd all bash each other's heads in for a sandwich. Total anarchy, despite what the little skaterpunks might say, doesn't work (I have to argue this point with the extremists in the libertarian movement). Just look at the Sudan! Lawlessness is opposite of civil behaviour and respect for the law.
