In Australia there is typically a winter, and typically a summer. At the moment, I keep the butter out as it isn't hot enough to spoil. Butter does spoil if there are no preservatives that go into it.

In summer however, I only need to keep butter out of the fridge for an hour or so (we are exposed to temperatures over 35 C) before it starts to become runny.

So in our case, it comes down to the fluctuations of weather.

I keep it in the fridge, unless I know I won't be using it for a while (ie still using the old one) in which case I keep it in the freezer. I don't see why you wouldn't keep it cool, you might as well leave the milk out too.

Inside the fridge. There are temperatures over 30 C in my region this time of the year, if I let it out it melts and becomes warm. Yuck.

False humility? I'll be cod-scalloped! That comment pinches me to the bone! I'll just lob(ster) a reply back to you.

Outside . I have no refrigerator running .
Noise and electrical power consumption are reasons to not have it on.

I do not eat butter much and also no margarine and seldom vegetable oil .

I have used to store butter in the fridge because I did not know it otherwise.

I have seen people storing butter outside the fridge , but it never dawned to
me to do it also .

On seldom occasions I buy butter, the butter is eaten up in a few days.

There is already a lot of fats in cheese and sliced meat skivers and
I switched to mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard as slipping underlayer on
    sandwiches.

If you don't use your fridge, then you must eat everything out of the can and jar, with lots of preservatives, right? I like most of my food room temperature, so I guess I am with you on this matter.

Anyway, I have only occasionally left my butter out and it's usually just for big meals, when preparing for family to come over and eat. Unsalted butter is for baking and shouldn't be left out, but salted butter is for bread and is fine to keep on the counter.

Margarine is gross, but I like butter spread with rapeseed oil.

Most canned or "jarred" foods do not have any preservatives, especially in Europe. It is in America that preservatives are overused in almost everything you buy. If you home can or preserve your foods you don't have the preservatives either. I have been home canning most of my life except my excursions in the military, here are some threads and I use no commercial preservatives.

I leave butter out and use what is called a "butter bell", its a ceramic crock with special lid. You actually put the butter in the underside of the lid and fill the crock with water. The water creates a seal from outside air and the butter won't go rancid. Its a good idea to change the water every other day.

Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.

Salted butter will keep for weeks on the kitchen counter if it is covered or otherwise protected from airborne contaminants and microbes.

I use Land-O-Lakes salted whipped butter in a tub that sits on the table always ready to spread. It doesn't usually last more than two weeks as I butter a lot of bread.

I worry about butter spoiling so I would keep a small amount out of the fridge. I love butter, it goes great with good bread.

If it is salted it will not spoil if kept at moderate room temp.
