    Vegans Are Freaking Insane

    Mark Macaskill

A girl of 12 brought up by her parents on a strict vegan diet has been admitted to hospital with a degenerative bone condition said to have left her with the spine of an 80-year-old.
Doctors are under pressure to report the couple, from Glasgow, to police and social workers amid concerns her health and welfare may have been neglected in pursuit of their beliefs.
The youngster, fed on a strict meat- and dairy-free diet from birth, is being treated at the city’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children. She is said to have a severe form of rickets and to have suffered a number of fractured bones. The condition is caused by a lack of vitamin D, which is needed to absorb calcium and is found in liver, oily fish and dairy produce.
Dr Faisal Ahmed, the consultant treating the child, said he believed the dangers of forcing children to follow a strict vegan diet needed to be highlighted. “Something like this needs publicity,” he said. However, he refused to blame the parents, who are understood to be well-known figures in Glasgow’s vegan community: “We shouldn’t name and shame \. Mum feels guilty about the whole thing and feels bad about it.”
Jonathan Sher, head of policy at Children in Scotland, said: “If the consequence of parental behaviour is physical, mental or emotional harm to a child, then the child protection system should become involved.” Bill Aitken, justice spokesman for the Scottish Conservatives, added: “If the youngster is coming to clinical harm, something must be done.”
In 2001, British vegans Hazmik and Garabet Manuelyan, from Staines, were sentenced to three years’ community rehabilitation after they admitted starving daughter Arenai, 10 months, to death. She had been fed nothing but breast milk, raw fruit, vegetables and nuts.
Veganism is becoming increasingly popular due to concerns about animal welfare. There are 250,000 adherents in the UK and the Vegan Society publishes a guide, Feeding Your Vegan Infant With Confidence. A spokesman said: “I would suggest that it is not the vegan diet itself \ but the parents.”
Professor Tom Sanders, head of nutrition and dietetics at King’s College London, warned that while most vegan parents give their children vitamin and mineral supplements, there was a core of hardliners putting their children’s health at risk.
He said: “Some of them think we’re still monkeys that can live on fruit and nuts.”
Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS board declined to comment. A spokesman for Glasgow city council said the matter had not been referred to its social work department.

I would say the vegan diet that causes it, meanwhile I don't see any person in sound mind could argue otherwise.

The diet that child was on was a lot more strict than a vegan diet. She only ate raw fruits, raw vegetables and nuts. I kind of doubt that she was still on breast milk at age 12.

It is possible for adults to live and be quite healthy that way, but you need to include a source of calcium and protein for the little ones. They probably don't need bread, and a lot of the crap foods that we eat, but fat, especially butter or milk fat is really good for the brains of children.

    Exactly.

Raw veganism is not for everyone and not for all ages. And still, the parents must have not been meticulous enough in substituting the proteins, calcium, and other ingredients missing from the strict diet.

Ooooh...the horror. :p What other mammal drinks milk (especially other species milk) after they've ceased breast feeeding?
Breast feeding should be enough...it's just that 'modern' mothers don't breast feed as much as they should (or not at all), hence the need for foreign milk.

These people were simply clueless. I'll bring my children up vegan and I'll do it properly. I'm a 5'11", 14 stone (88kg) weight lifting vegan and I'm among the healthiest people I know.

To summarise: vegan's aren't insane. Bad vegans are... just like bad meat-eaters who live on McDonalds.

I am lacto-veg. I have tried vegan, not sure if it is my body or my stomach which finds it hard.

I think that I would encourage my children to be lacto-veg. I have seen the results of such a diet in children and they grow into beautiful adults with good teeth, hair, skin, nails, bone structure, as well as having a pleasant nature. They really do stand out amongst their peers.

I suppose vegan is possible, and I think that the parents in the above article were probably going a bit far and restricting calories and wheat, really anorexia or something like that.

I have also seen families who eat vast amounts of meat, who do not have the 'meaty' appearance of most meat-eaters, and their children are also as charming as lacto-veg children so perhaps there are no hard and fast rules.

I was a vegan until my doctor told me I have to stop or I'm going to die ._.

But really I don't eat a lot of meat still nor dairy (I always hated dairy and only really started to eat it this year) nor eggs...

I don't think veganism is insane, but it should be started after the body has grown enough rather than from birth.

    Fads, fads, fads

Our dentition shows clearly what we are OMNIVORES. We are not herbivores. If we were we could graze in the fields or browse in the forests. Our teeth are suited for a mixed diet of meat and vegetable foods. Not only are we CAPABLE of subsisting on such a mixed diet. WE NEED TO.

If, in order to be healthy, we need to supplement a Vegan diet with artificial mineral and vitamin supplements, then this is prima facie evidence that this diet is not adequate for our needs. This is not a natural diet for us.

Partly, this is a matter of to what our bodies have become accustomed. At the age of 40, having begun to study Hinduism, I sought to become a vegetarian. I did not flourish. My body had had 40 years to become adapted to an omnivorous diet.

Having studied the dentition of ancient animal species in Vertebrate Paleontology, I came to realise that we can infer the type of diet for which the animal is best suited by its distinctive dentition. An animal develops the kinds of teeth it needs for the kind of diet it needs. It's not that a herbivore CAN eat vegetation, it MUST. Given its distinctive dentition, a carnivore MUST eat meat.

Misguided Vegans have starved cats to death by forcing them to eat a meat-free diet. Our omnivorous dentition, as I mentioned above does not merely PERMIT us to eat a mixed meat-and-veggies diet, it proves that that is what our bodies NEED.

If I saw teeth like ours in the jaw of an extinct animal, I would not hesitate to say that it lived on a diet of meat and vegetable food, not merely that it COULD survive on such a diet, but that such a diet was NORMAL for it, AS IT IS FOR US !

Beef is glorious, but my metabolism seems to demand red meat. And I don't ignore it, although ten years ago....

There are two cows in a field. "Buttercup," says the first cow, "I'm getting nervous about this Mad Cow Disease. "I'm not," says Buttercup. "I'm a bleedin' hamster."

Meanwhile, I'm healthy after all these abaginanqanan........Years.
