As I said, some people are just too stubborn, especially less modernised people.
This is the problem, isn't it?
I dream of bringing up my children in some rural idyll, but there's the chance that they'll later rebel against this, have no sympathy whatsoever with my views, dive into a city as soon as they are independent and take part in all the things I fled! Hard one to solve.

Interesting how the Amish in America send their young adults off to see what the Big Bad World is really like for a limited period, and how most end up coming back to the fold, appreciating why their forefathers left the world.

I think, in theory, that an isolated non-modern life could potentially be a good life, but the problem arises when people want the benefits of modernism without paying attention to what is needed in order to uphold these benefits. People want a healthcare system, underwater tunnels, junkfood and so on, but are too stubborn to understand that this requires money, education and exercise. With the benefits of modernism comes responsibility, and when I say conservative people, I mean those people who take the benefits of modernism for granted without taking everything else for granted.

That's really beautiful. I could live like that. No offence to the Althing but I could easily live without internet if I could live simply and happily like that couple.

No offense but, I think this image of living in nature without modernism and the Nordic countries is overromanticised by some people. I once tried living in the middle of nature with some friends, using as little modern things as possible. It was an evil socialist experiment we did. :p We didn't last more than a week without modern things, because one of my friends got sick and we needed a cell phone to communicate and call someone to drive him home. Modern things aren't that bad, I live in a very big city but there are natural sights here too like Tiergarten where you can go to relax and forget about the crowds and pollution, but I don't imagine me getting myself stuck on a lonely island in the middle of nowhere for the rest of my life. After a while I'll probably need the Internet to get in touch with news and people I know. SImilar to what someone said in another thread on modernisation, I don't want to do the washing by hand all my life, live in the dark, give birth at home and die if I get sick because I can't be treated in a hospital.
Some people go wow! about countries like Iceland and the Faroes thinking they look typically like the pictures they see advertised on the Internet. I had this image too until I learned more about these countries and saw some cities aren't that different from our own and they are very modern.

Wow, the islands are beautiful - such dramatic landscapes. However I'm not sure I could live without a forest in sight. I like the woods.

In his office overlooking the pastures, mobile phones are spread out on the desk next to the computer.

"I have television, Internet, and broadband thanks to an antenna on the roof that picks up the signals from a transmitter on top of a mountain on the island opposite us," he says.

"Without communication with the outside world, I wouldn't have stayed," he adds.

"Me either. I'm a primitive 'Friday' (Robinson Crusoe's companion), but one who likes a little comfort," says Lukka.

She uses email to set up appointments with her hairdresser and doctor and does her grocery shopping online, "especially fruits, veggies and grains."

Three times a week the couple can use the state-run helicopter to travel into Torshavn, at a cost of 170 kroner (23 euros, 36 dollars), to pick up necessities and run other errands.
They are living with the benefits of modern life. That sounds like a beautiful life but not the one I want. (I could not leave my kids at this point.)

Sounds like they have the best of both worlds. I could happily imagine living like that in an ideal world. Unfortunately, given the state of things in the world today, i would feel like a coward if i went and hid on an island while my nation was being slowly wiped from existence by mass immigration and demographic suicide.

For those who can read German:

Now there´s also a German article about that "Robinson Crusoe"! You can see some new pictures, too. He is living alone with his wife on that island.

You can live out in the middle of nowhere while having the benefits of modern society, but that means somewhere there has to be a factory to produce them. Not everyone can live like that, that's great for those who can though.
