German Kindergarteners Answering Call of the Wild

If you’ve ever wished you could play outside all day, running through forests and playing in the mud until the sun went down you just may be fascinated to learn that there are kindergarten schools in Germany that now eschew classrooms in favor of the forest floor, and head outside to learn all day, come rain or shine.

And while schools and parents in some countries push their kids to read, write, and surf the Web earlier and earlier in an effort to sharpen their skills for an increasingly competitive global economy; these kids get to sing songs, build fires, roll around in the mud and kick back in their “wald sofa” of tree stumps and twigs.

All told it seems there are about 700 Waldkindergarten, or “forest kindergartens” throughout Germany, with kids discovering the world in a different fashion.

Intriguingly, there’s a tiny high school in the woods of Northeastern America, inspired by Thoreau, that’s taken a similar approach with kids who might otherwise have dropped out or found themselves in trouble of one form or another.

    That's fantastic! :thumb001:
I shamelessly admit promoting evil socialist propaganda by writing an article in the magazine I work for about how parents should take their kids for nature walks instead of the usual Sunday trips to McDonalds, allow them to get dirty instead of being hysterical about cleaningness and let the kids enjoy the countryside, instead of parking them in from of a monitor and letting them rot their lives away.

    Here's some more socialist propaganda:

Getting Dirty May Lift Your Mood

Treatment of mice with a 'friendly' bacteria, normally found in the soil, altered their behavior in a way similar to that produced by antidepressant drugs, reports research published in the latest issue of Neuroscience.

These findings, identified by researchers at the University of Bristol and colleagues at University College London, aid the understanding of why an imbalance in the immune system leaves some individuals vulnerable to mood disorders like depression.

    [...]

Loss of contact with Nature makes unhappy, problematic kids who end up as insufficient and/or potentially criminal personalities. Let your kids get dirty!

Learning to surf the web, read and write in kindergarten? What nonsense. Kids are kids, too young for this in kindergarten years. They have time for this later. Instead, they should be taught about nature and social interaction. Learning to do small little things like these. Good initiative this kindergarten took.

Speaking of socialism. In GDR kindergartens kids were encouraged to interact socially and were taken outside in the nature to play. We were often taken on a walk together to explore the surroundings.

Another thing that was done in my childhood was helping to prepare food and serve each other meals, or do some small tasks in the garden. Nobody was prissy about getting dirty - we often did, since we were kids, doh - because we were taught to tidy up after ourselves once we had the work done.

Socialism is no "must" to get this idea into the heads of more and more parents. It´s unpolitical and shouldn´t be instrumentalised by this or the other side.

While I grew up on the countryside myself, there was no need for a forest kindergarten (Because we could go always outside if the weather was fine). During simmer and autumn we had trips into the forests, wandered trough our region and learned many interesting things like some plants and animals. My kindergarten had a big garden, too. It was a very funny time.

    Thoreau-inspired high school

Oh, a high school inspired by a ne'er-do-well who survived mainly by sponging off his friends, how nice !

This kinda reminds me of the kindergartens in my own country during the 80's, we too were taught to play and to be in contact with the surrounding nature (my kindergarten was situated in one of the more affluent neighbourhoods in The Hague. (Hollanders: the area around Sorghvliet), were their was an abundance of trees and pastures.
Later on, during primary school this attitude was maintained, but was destroyed later on during the 90's. In the Netherlands, the 1980's were the period of the dawn of eco-friendliness, affinity with nature and were a rather left-wing era (as has started during the to the social(ist) 1970's). We were taught to interact with nature and with each other.

Exactly. Well.. in the 1980's and 1990's there was the AIDS-scare in the main cities of my country so we only played outside in our neighbourhood under supervision (at least in my family). In the minds of parents, boyscout- leaders and teachers there must always have been this small risk of a child finding a needle or a comdome. For some reason I tend remember that period quite well.
But in school and at the boy scouts we were taught to help out in chores, serve meals, help out in gardens or while building camp and clean up, including ourselves, afterwards.

If anything, it is the socialists who are responsible for kids no longer playing outdoors since they turned child molesters and other criminals loose on society. Up until the 80s or so, it was common in the US for children to run around and play outside unsupervised for most of their childhood, but today due to real or perceived danger, most parents don't do this

Yeah, we had that happen in the US too, with drugs/gangs and child abductors/molesters more than aids needles and condoms. Some of it was justified, some of it overreaction

This is not the only problem though, also all the parenting theories parents have about starting their children with a strict regime early on, put them into team sports etc, having school uniforms and heavy workloads of busywork 'to prepare them for the adult business world'.

Kids should be learning to read in preschool and definitely by kindergarten, but also need unstructured time. I think the of unstructured time in childhood may be a reason we now have so many 'adult children' in their 20s and even 30s who live with their parents or become permanent university students and want no responsibilities and party all the time

I've also seen studies that say that is the reason so many people have allergies today, is not being exposed to normal elements of the natural environment at a young age and developing immunities

Why do you generalise against socialists? In my country, it wasn't socialists who were responsible for this. The social democrats and christian democrats focus about German guilt and thought crimes and indoctrinating German children with multiculturalism in kindergartens. The sooner they learn about the Holocaust, the better.

That's generally the label carried by people who want a society where criminals have more rights, the problem is that that means the law abiding people have less rights, even those who are not actual victims are often roundabout victims by being forced to adjust their lifestyle. We are not at the level yet of South Africa or Brazil where they have to hide in fenced in compounds, as referenced in previous posts having a society where criminals have more rights means children have less freedom because of fear by their parents.
