Wink Verdonk's Party Puts Focus on Nationalism

Verdonk's party puts focus on nationalism
    Friday 04 April 2008

Independent MP and former integration minister Rita Verdonk positioned her new political grouping Trots op Nederland (Proud of the Netherlands) firmly in the nationalist camp during the party’s inaugural speech in Amsterdam on Thursday night.

Verdonk stressed the need to protect Dutch identity from outside influences and passionately rejected what she said was a growing call for the Dutch to adjust to other cultures. ‘To that I say: enough! There are limits.’

According to today’s Volkskrant this is the first time that any Dutch political party has played the nationalist card so emphatically.

Speaking on Thursday’s Nova current affairs show, the leader of the social democrat D66 party Alexander Pechtold said one-third of Verdonk’s 30 minute speech was dominated by anti-foreigner rhetoric. But she had failed to come up with concrete proposals on issues such as integration, he said.

As well as immigration and integration, Verdonk said Trots op Nederland (TON) will focus on education, reducing bureaucracy, security, traffic, healthcare and development aid. The Volkskrant listed the following among the main points from her political programme:

Scrapping provincial governments and halving the number of MPs to 75

Tougher punishment on groups that are over-represented in crime statistics

Cutting the development aid budget by two-thirds and using the money instead for police, teachers and nurses salaries

Extending permission for shops to open on Sundays

Limit public discussion on major infrastructure building projects to ensure they go through

Furthermore, Verdonk said she wants to distance herself from ‘the political elite in The Hague’ and give the public more say in her new party’s policies by setting up a ‘wiki-style’ online communication system.

"Nationalism ?" Holland's omnipotence... she is a traitor to all patriots.
Well.. she now gave me a good reason to either vote for Wilders or for any other party that wishes to combat Islamofascism except for hers. She wants to abolish the provinces (the fabric of our traditions and nation).

    Never !

I hope that she realises that she will cut her own fingers with this idea of centralization "commie style". I actually felt sick- how can she call herself a nationalist when she wants to rape ages of tradition and come with a full blown unitary state

Why would she even promote such a plan? The rest that I read from the article seems good. But then she goes and adds "Scrapping provincial governments". : What does that have anything to do with nationalism? As Lawspeaker said, it's almost anti-nationalism to scrap that tradition.

More centralism? Why would she want to do that, unless of course to increase the power the Hague elite she claims to want to distance herself from.

give the public more say in her new party’s policies by setting up a ‘wiki-style’ online communication system.
And this is commical. Who wants to say how fast the party if following trough with this will become a farleft party, or something that will become an unguided projectile.

ON bitterlemon I had read the following piece. Of course it is in Dutch but I will quote a part :

With other words the Nationalism of Verdonk and TON are according to the writter of a superficial nature so that the elites can easly manipulate the contents and therefore increase their powerbase.

Decentralized government and economy are the most important features of nationalism today, which protect nations from subversion.

For decentralized goverement Dutch nationalists shouldn't look at Verdonk. The way her party will come to decisions it will be highly centralized, or better defined it will swap every accidental minority under the carpet.

I used to somewhat like her back when she was a minister for the VVD, but she has apparently descended into full-blown populism. Her wiki-style program can only undermine the relevance of elected representatives and open the doors to ochlocracy. One of her few good points is her tough stance on immigration, but if her principles are dictated by whatever the masses desire at any particular moment, there's no telling how long that will last.
