Exclamation Mobile Phones 'More Dangerous Than Smoking'

Brain expert warns of huge rise in tumours and calls on industry to take immediate steps to reduce radiation

    Sunday, 30 March 2008

Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take "immediate steps" to reduce exposure to their radiation.

The study, by Dr Vini Khurana, is the most devastating indictment yet published of the health risks.

It draws on growing evidence – exclusively reported in the IoS in October – that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer. Cancers take at least a decade to develop, invalidating official safety assurances based on earlier studies which included few, if any, people who had used the phones for that long.

    Full story

I, for one, am extremely careless when it comes to that. I carry mine on my jacket pocket, I have it next to my bed when I sleep, I sometimes carry two phones and I don't use a hands free...

I am extremely concerned by the fact that even if I chose to throw away mine, everyone in Athens has a mobile phone (or two) and they carry it with them at all times. So any given ride at the metro could be worse than having an X-ray taken...and so on, and so forth.
Although it will probably be their smoking that will kill me first, given the fact that my colleagues smoke in my face 8 hours a day. :p

I did notice that in some parts of Europe people smoked like chimneys and cell phones like left hands. I fortunatly do all my talking on the internet and rarely carry my phone on me. I carry it in my pants pocket when I am out of the house and I rarely get phone calls.

When I first got a cell phone of my own, I can remember having to end the call because of a pain at the side of my head. This was nearly seven years ago. After that, I began warning people that by using a cell phone, they might as well be asking for a brain tumor. Others accused me of being paranoid, but any simple knowledge of microwaves should tell you otherwise. Sadly, people just don't care enough. What's worse is parents are handing them to their children as young as 10 or 12 years old, unknowingly contributing to their ill health. The home phone will soon become obsolete regardless of the ridiculous fees cell phone companies charge. No one would prefer to use a payphone or ask to use a phone. We are developing a deadly habit in the name of convenience.

I carry my mobile usually in my bag, away from my body. Normally I don't really phone a lot anyways..
