    Race Row Over Vogue Cover

    The controversial Vogue cover

The cover of the latest issue of Vogue magazine is always eagerly awaited as a guide to trends and styles. And when the fashion bible announced that a black man would grace that space for the first time in the magazine's 116-year history, there was already extra interest in its April issue.

But the picture of the basketball star, LeBron James, towering over the Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen, has made the kind of headlines that even Anna Wintour, the magazine's publicity-conscious British editor, was probably not expecting.

The image has provoked allegations of racial stereotyping, with some critics saying the image of James, his teeth bared in a mixture of a roar and a growl, is "ape-like".

I find it offensive also. A Negro with the most famous White model in the world is just another in-your-face miscegenationist message perpetuated by the mainstream media. As for Lebron James looking ape-like, well... he can't help it.

Sounds like they're trying the push the "Beauty and The Beast" image.

This isn't the first time a Negro has been on the cover of Vogue. P. Diddy was featured in the October 2001 issue with Naomi Campbell. I wonder from whose head that idea came and why.

It's funny how media always show Negroid men with Europid women but never the opposite. That's how it's in real life.

Sometimes you see White men with Negro women, but the women in those relationships nearly always have noticeable Europid admixture.

Or the man is so shovanist that he is borderline gay in the grecko-romanesque manor. Not trying to sound rude or biggitive but that's usually what I see. The while males I know who find blacks attractive talk about women like they are less than animals. And have almost a panic stricken fear of homosexuality.

Regarding the Vogue cover, I can see both sides of the argument, but simply put, there are far more blacks famous for their physicality than for their intellect, therefore the poses in the media will reflect that.

[Note: Classification of Gisele Bundchen has been split here.]

Honestly the first thing I saw in this cover was a black man holding a white women and the words "Perfect Fit" printed boldly next to it. eyes:

Don't you think it's more racist to say "He looks like King Kong" and "He appears ape-like" or "He appears to be growling and snarling", etc. than to make the magazine cover and clearly not have that intention in mind. I mean when you see the cover for the first time and say those things aren't you basically admitting to seeing racial stereotypes in Blacks.

I've seen plenty of magazine covers before that have Black men looking like this on them. And LeBron James saw the cover before it came out I would think. If he thought it was racist in anyway or if he didn't like the way that certain shot portrayed him he would have said something. I wonder if anyone has asked LeBron what he thinks.

Lots of Black people think it's hip to act in a way that is portrayed by civilized humans as being "ape-like." The swaying walk, the tough guy attitude, and the overpowering constitution is typical with the Black youth community's association with identity. It is important for them to be masculine, athletic, and anti-gay. European Turks try but fail to duplicate this same kind of distinct identity.
