I agree - if Peter I was a dictator, then every known emperor or king should be on this list too.

Exactly! Saddam is great on TV upstaging the kangeroo court attempting to put him on trial. He is certainly more fun than George Bush, another dictator whose name wasn't on the list. Anyway, what ever happened to that idea of a grudge match between George and Saddam, pit/octagon, four inch knives, two go in--one comes out, winner take, all for supremecy in Iraq?

Secular? What of our Oliver [who I would have voted for, instead of any of those butchers]? Does he not count? I suppose you could call Calvin a dictator too, almost. [I thought of them both, as they share the same memorial in Genf].

And I'm not going to vote for that unpatriot Pyotr Alekseevich, 'Otets Otechestva' indeed. Scorning Moskva lyubimaya moya! I have no patience for Russkies who extoll the virtues of Piter against Golden Domed Moscow. Even some ungrateful Moskviches do it...

If it wasn't for Cromwell, Gaeus Julius Caesar would get my vote, even if only for his writings!

Sv: Who is your favorite dictator?

Oliver Cromwell was the first "Caesarian" of this Western cycle. And my maxim of the Caesarian-Bonapartist type is clear: "Dictators are secular rulers, thus a result of Enlightenment/Democracy, even if they were offically elected by the "people" or not (and most dictators were populary elected)."

    1) Cromwell didn't have any genealogical claims to the throne.
    2) He didn't claim any throne...
    3) Since he didn't claim authority of his rule on the regal principle, he was secular; searched approval of his "protectorate" from the lower estates.

...thus his rule was democratically-oriented, and secular-based.

Re: Who is your favorite dictator?

Dictators are a dime a dozen.

Show me the nations that have been ruled by Democracies.

I don’t think a “Great Dictator” (isn’t that the title of a Charlie Chaplin film?) should drive his country into destruction, like Adolph Hitler did.

I voted for Josef Stalin because I am not that Historically educated and he was one of the dictator’s with whom I am familiar.

He “won” WWII and increased the size of his Empire.

He is also famous for such Machiavellian statements as “No Man, No Problem” and “The death of a Man is a tragedy - the death of a million, a statistic”.

I don’t really have a “favorite” dictator but I answered this question the best I could.

Re: Who is your favorite dictator?

This poll should be re-done with all names mentioned included. Also, we should be able to pick our top three. What about Pinochett? What about Iddy Amin? What about Julius Ceaser, Darius, Xerxes, Montazuma? Another point which was almost discussed is: are dictatiorships more successful than democracies? Many of these dictators had long runs in power with power being transfered to a son or other dictatorial successor.
