Can't we just get back to the topic at hand, Celebrating Germanic Heritage in the U.S., without arguing over dual ethnic-ship or what it means to be Norwegian?

One of the small mountain communities I lived in had an Oktoberfest. We also had quite a few Germans and a German deli-restaurant there. So, we had German food, mostly sausages, and mostly American beer. There was a German band but also Country-Western music. It was mostly a chance for the local merchants to sell their goods and for real estate salesmen to interest tourists in local houses. Besides the German theme nobody, including the local Germans, read anything we might consider "preservationist" into it.

Yes, of course. But I think that the underlying issue, the one that has driven all of the recent "colonial vs. European" debates should not be ignored. Ethnic preservationists are going to be and should be pressed about exactly what it is that they believe. It's a real issue no doubt. It's important, I believe.

Well fine! Please state your position and the issues as you see them and post it in a new thread so it can be discussed without distraction. We just need to keep each thread from becoming a tangled, confusing mess, going several ways at once.

Why not? They do not live like Norwegians in Norway nor do they have all the same customs as I do (American). They become cornered into a separate ethnic group and I can think of nothing better than "Norwegian-American". An ethnicity is what it is currently as you say. So Norwegian-Americans should preserve their Norwegian-Americanness correct?

Incorrect. Norwegian-American is no more an ethnicity than German-Jewish is. As it was said before, to have an ethnicity you require ethnogenesis. This didn't happen in the US.

I understand that Americans need to claim preservation in order to feel less cultureless and less dull, but ask any European nationalist whether this is truly preservation of their European heritage, and many will say no.

    I won't go further off-topic than this.

This Idea is wrong. I was raised bilingual. My Parents taught me German even if I could have survived without it in this Region. If Parents care about the Preservation of their Heritage they can teach their Children the Language of their Ancestors too. Believe me, it won't be difficult and they will have a less harder Time if they visit the Countries of their Ancestors. Transylvanian Saxons are accepted by Germans and even have their own Cultural Socieites and Events in Germany, because they preserved their Heritage. We have been here longer than Germans in America. It is Possible. Where there's a Will there's a Way.

Not perfect preservation but something interesting. Holland Michigan. It is almost time for the tulip festival. They are still mostly Dutch and frequently Dutch Reformed Christians. There are plenty of tourist traps but it still has the only Dutch windmill in the US.

[WIKIPEDIA]The city is home to the Holland Museum, which administers three museum facilities in the city. The first, the Holland Museum, is located in the former post office downtown and contains exhibits about the history of the city and the region. Another, The Cappon House Museum, was built in 1874 and is a historic museum that once housed the first mayor of Holland, influential Dutch immigrant Isaac Cappon. The Settlers House Museum, one of the few homes to survive the 1871 fire, contains furnishings and relics from the 19th Century and illustrates life for the city's working class in the early days of the city.

Holland is home to the world's largest pickle factory. The H.J. Heinz Company has operated the factory at the same location since 1897 and currently processes over 1 million pounds of pickles per day during the green season.

Holland's downtown is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The "Snowmelt Project" established pipes transporting warm water from the nearby power plant to travel underneath downtown with the purpose of clearing the streets and sidewalks in the downtown area of any snow. Nearby Holland State Park is among the most visited parks in the state. Across the channel from the park is the Holland Harbor Light, known as "Big Red", one of the most photographed lighthouses in Michigan. De Zwaan, an original 250-year-old Dutch windmill, is situated on Windmill Island, a municipal park. Its height is 125 feet (38 m) with 40-foot (12 m) sails.

Holland was the unlikely birthplace of Slashdot, an influential early Internet weblog created by Hope College student Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda.

CNN Money named Holland as one of the top five places to retire.[7][/WIKIPEDIA]

New Ulm, the City of "Charm and Tradition," is nestled just 90 miles southwest of the Twin Cities, in the heart of the scenic Minnesota River Valley.

New Ulm is becoming known as the "Christmas City" with its many Christmas traditions held each year. We "kick off" our Christmas season with a parade of lights, held the Friday after Thanksgiving.

New Ulm has many historic attractions; Hermann Monument, Glockenspiel, Harkin Store, Museum, Wanda Gag Home, John Lind Mansion and Schell's Brewery are just to mention a few.

We celebrate these festivals during the year:

    * Oktoberfest - held the first and second weekend in October, is held in two locations and also features German food, music and entertainment.
    * Fasching - held the weekend before Ash Wednesday, is a German type Mardi Gras. This festival, put on by the Concord Singers, features a costume ball, German food and music.

    History
The idea for the City of New Ulm, a settlement of German immigrants, was conceived by Frederick Beinhorn in Germany. Beinhorn came to America in 1852. By 1853, he was in Chicago where he and a group of other German immigrants formed the "Chicago Land Society." In 1854, the site of the present New Ulm was selected by the advance group. The name, New Ulm, was selected because many of the original settlers were from the Province of Wurttemberg, Germany, of which Ulm is the principal city.

In 1856 Wilhelm Pfaender arrived in New Ulm with members of the Turner Colonization Society of Cincinnati. The two groups merged and in 1857, the town of New Ulm was incorporated by an act of the Legislature.

The City of New Ulm was important in Minnesota's history. The first steamboats passed by New Ulm in 1853, going up river with troops to lay out the site for Fort Ridgely. For the next 20 years, boats brought setters, freight, Indian supplies and gold to the area.

The indians mingled freely with New Ulm settlers in those days. Much trading was done between the Indians and the settlers of New Ulm.

New Ulm was nearly overrun in the Dakota Conflict of 1862. A few buildings which still stand along Minnesota Street served as a refuge for residents and nearby settlers.

With the election of New Ulm's John Lind as the 14th governor of Minnesota in 1899 came significiant cultural, social and political influence. The town grew in education, sports, entertainment and music.

The German heritage of New Ulm is evident in the architecture, and especially in the neatness and care visible in the trim yards and well-kept houses and store fronts. New Ulm, when laid out by the German Land Society's plans, we given a precise layout of streets and parks which provide a variety of recreational opportunities.

New Ulm is a progressive town, with agriculture, industries, retail stores, progressive parochial and public schools, including a private college, and a population of nearly 14,000 people.

Solvang, California is another Germanic tourist trap. Its theme is Danish. It is the town near Santa Barbara where Ronald Reagan went to vote for himself.
