    How Many Germanics Are There?

I was about to write exactly this point written by Siebenbürgerin. (great foto)

Tthe Russlanddeutsche that are an interesting Germanic group. Many of these are today resettled in the occupied North East Prussia under Russian control. They mostly came from Siberia and Kazakhstan.
Most settled in the city Königsberg which the Soviets remained Kaliningrad in 1948. I read many others were resettled in Germany but because they had become so Russified many had problems re-sassimilating and then some of these also migrated to Königsberg.

Some of the Volga Germans settled in South America..

And also the ethnic Germans from Romania, Hungary, Russia and other Countries in Central, South-East and East Europe. They are called Volksdeutsche. And also the Finlandswedes who are of Swedish Blood. Maybe other Germanics in other Countries. I mostly know about Germans. You also forget the Germans from Luxembourg and Liechtenstein.

In the cases of the former colonial lands estimates are hard to produce due to the intervening time in which the various European ethnicities coalesced.

The case of Australia for example; early on in the thread an estimate of 3/4 of the Australian population as being Germanic is perhaps a bit generous. About 35% of Australians have Irish ancestry, the Aboriginal proportion is only slight at about 2% (the majority of these being mixed race), Asians (both southern and eastern) amount to around 7% and then there are southern and eastern Europeans alot of whom trace to the post war era when Australia boosted its population by 1 million immigrants in the ten years to 1955 - about half of whom were Italians, Greeks, Poles etc.

So an estimate of 15 million is a bit on the generous side. Further, up till 1946 Australia's population was overwhelmingly Anglo-Celtic - however by the turn of the century there was enough blending of those ethnicities to move some commentators of the time to announce the creation of a "new people" and a "new identity". So while there are 35% of Australians tracing Irish heritage, there are also perhaps 40-45% tracing English, 5% tracing Greek and perhaps the same again Italian, slightly less Slavic, similar again Dutch and Scandinavian, German and then the Aboriginal and Asian proportions. All up - more than 100% showing the admixture between ethnicities.
