Study Finds 1/4 American Teen Girls (40% of Non-virgins) Have STDs

The overall figure is 25%, but further down in the article we see "About half of the girls acknowledged having sex; among them, the rate was 40 percent."

So, with a bit of math we can calculate that 80% of black teenage girls and 32% of white and mexican teenage girls who are not virgins have STDs

By comparison, does anyone know the rates in European countries?

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/condi....ap/index.html

At least one in four teenage girls nationwide has a sexually transmitted disease, or more than 3 million teens, according to the first study of its kind in this age group.

A virus that causes cervical cancer is by far the most common sexually transmitted infection in teen girls aged 14 to 19, while the highest overall prevalence is among black girls -- nearly half the blacks studied had at least one STD. That rate compared with 20 percent among both whites and Mexican-American teens, the study from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found.

About half of the girls acknowledged having sex; among them, the rate was 40 percent. While some teens define sex as only intercourse, other types of intimate behavior including oral sex can spread some infections.

For many, the numbers most likely seem "overwhelming because you're talking about nearly half of the sexually experienced teens at any one time having evidence of an STD," said Dr. Margaret Blythe, an adolescent medicine specialist at Indiana University School of Medicine and head of the American Academy of Pediatrics' committee on adolescence.

But the study highlights what many doctors who treat teens see every day, Blythe said.

Dr. John Douglas, director of the CDC's division of STD prevention, said the results are the first to examine the combined national prevalence of common sexually transmitted diseases among adolescent girls. He said the data, from 2003-04, probably reflect current rates of infection.

"High STD rates among young women, particularly African-American young women, are clear signs that we must continue developing ways to reach those most at risk," Douglas said.

It is sad when such young girls submit to letting them selves sink so low, only I don't totally blame them because I feel its shoved down their throats by media, music stars, todays culture, and things. I wish it could be different.

I do not think it matters actually who you are or how much money you have or how old you are, sex has become a little about what its not about so this means sleeping around as "We" are is causing diseases.

Quality parenting helps some what, not always unfortunately.

Hmm...well, it shows that people are careless. Obviously government will use this piece of news to justify measures like teaching sex education to 5 yr olds (recently proposed in the UK), i.e. stealing as much of childhood's innocence as possibly from them as it were, when it should seem quite evident to me that the increased openness towards the whole topic leads to much more careless behaviour in this area, not seldom triggered by peer pressure ("OMG? You're turning 12 next week and haven't had sex?!"). Obviously, young fornication would always happen, even in the oh-so-romanticised past, but at least then it would be the few seeking to be rebellious rather than it being a mass phenomenon, methinks.

Well, so it seems after all that AIDS is the LORD's way of dealing with overpopulation in Africa (and the under-class and the left wing for that matter). :p

"High STD rates among young women, particularly African-American young women, are clear signs that we must continue developing ways to reach those most at risk," Douglas said.

And those most at risk will be sweet talked into not using protection. These young "men" they are sleeping with revel in siring children they have no intention of supporting, of course they won't care if they've spread an STD.

My impression was that the men are the ones more likely to be doing the sweet talking when it comes to protection (not that I like condoms either).

I'm wondering why this study only focused on girls, are they somehow more susceptible to STDs than men?

That's what I was getting at. Blame the awkward phrasing on the late hour.

To address your second point, it is easier for a woman to get AIDS from a man, than vice versa. HPV, mentioned earlier in this thread, often causes no symptoms in men but will sterilize women.

Probably not, it is just that young men probably do not get penile exams. I mean how often do you men get examined for STD's?

Young women are encouraged to see a gynecologist annually especially if they are sexually active. The PAP smear is primarily looking for cancer, but this can be caused by STD's (HPV). Many women now also get tested for STD's once a year as well.

I think that this study is probably trying to find evidence to support vaccinations against HPV for young girls. In general I think that the vaccinations are probably a good idea since nothing seems to convince young people not to have sex. The argument that it encourages sex doesn't work for me. Even if girls are virgins until they marry that doesn't mean that their husbands will be.

Considering how masked the true statistic for Euros is on this one I don't really feel this is all that impressive. We know how much an issue STD's are in the straight black and latino population. I think I knew one woman who had hepatitis C in Finland and she was a heavy drug user.
