Post Re: Photographs and postcards of lynching

It is pretty common in societies where the government neglects to punish criminals. The statement of innocent men of being hanged is false: what proof do they have of innocence? Most of those who were lynched in my region were done so because they had been let out of jail numerous times after murder and armed robbery, or because they were serial rapists... again, people who had been 'let go' by the authorities.

Of course, lynching is horrible. That was the point. All executions are horrible. I find lethal injection and gassing to be particularly inhumane. Death by hanging was just the cultural Anglo method for execution of anti-socials. Scots had 'murder holes' ... six foot shafts in the ground filled with water. They tied the hands and feet, and dropped the fellow in head first. Apaches would tie down a man on an alkali flat spread-eagle, make cuts all over the body ... so he would flinch in spasms keeping the wounds open and slowly die of dehydration, desanguination, sun burn, etc. All those methods frighten me mightily. No worse than the 'Spread Eagle' execution/sacrifice practiced by pagan Norse on us Scots and others.
