    Two new Hannibal Lecter films

Author Thomas Harris is currently finishing a novel titled "Behind the Mask", which deals with Hannibal Lecter's youth -- from witnessing his sister being eaten by starving Russian soldiers in the aftermath of WW2, to his eventual migration to America.

The novel will be published this fall. Producer Dino de Laurentis plans to base two films on it, the first coming out in summer 2006. The director will be Englishman Peter Webber (The Girl with a Pearl Earring). No news as of now who will play the young Hannibal Lecter.

I'm sort of uncomfortable with the cult of Hannibal Lecter, thinking as I do that glamourising serial murderers is one of the sickest aspects of our society. On the other hand, I must admit that Lecter is one of my favorite baddie characters. Comments?

Well, it might be both good novels and movies but I wonder if not much of the thing about Hannibal Lecter themed films will be lost without Antony Hopkins as the old cunning gentleman cannibal. It doesn't provoce euphoria for me but it might be good reading/seeing.

I think you are right. Our society has less problems with serial killers than with nationalists.

    Hannibal Rising - Trailer

Curious filmgoers looking to get better acquainted with the silver screen's most notorious cannibalistic serial killer are sure to get their fair share of shocks and thrills as director Peter Webber teams with author Thomas Harris to explore the early life of well-read psychopath Hannibal Lecter. Based on author Harris' gruesome novel of the same name, Hannibal Rising travels back in time to World War II-era Lithuania, where an impressionable, well-to-do young boy named Hannibal was forced to watch helplessly as his family was massacred and his young sister was killed and eaten by desperate, famished soldiers.
