    Internet Friendship

Do you have friends on the Internet? How many?
Do you really consider them your friends?
Do you sign up on friend finding sites?
Is it possible to be friends with someone you've never met?

Yep. Mainly through computer gaming clans, which I joined up with through RL friends in undergrad, many of them I have met in RL now. Also many folks from nationalist sites I have met at various events.

I'm very careful with calling people friends but yes I'd say I have them on the internet and only there so none in real life but about 5 good ones in the internet. And yes I consider them friends since we know much more about eachother than most people we both know in real life plus that we can talk about almost everything including very personal things. I do not sign up on friend finding sites but I do sign up on sites where I can meet and talk to interesting people. Some of them might become friends.

Yes it is possible to be friends only over the internet but then just your internet personalities are befrieded with eachother. I once had such a friend and she was really nice over the internet and even called me the brother she never had. The problem was, that I just saw her ideal self in the internet, the person she would be in a perfect world but when I met her in real life it was not the perfect world but a world where she had a really weird and authoritarian family + an own slave. Eventually, our ideal personalities were friends but not the ones affected by this cruel world
(The other people I've met so far were kind of the same as they were in the net (except the poor spoken Engrish of my Korean friend ))

Most of the people I spoke to on the internet I eventually met and usually only because I or they were in the area and we decided to plan a day together. I met a few people in the states and some others when I had the opportunity to visit Europe. This was years ago, so I don't keep in touch with any of them anymore. No, I wouldn't consider them actual friends because of the distance and the fact that you can only get to know people online up to a certain extent. It is necessary to be able to interact in the real world regularly where there isn't a barrier. The Althing is the only place I'm currently signed up with. There are few nice people here I communicate with through PM and that's enough for me

I would also be a bit careful to call someone Ive never met "friends". But there are people I talk to online that I somewhat trust and I like talking to. Ive met some of them and left with nothing than a good impression. Since we had talked so much before, all the communications in real life went like we would have known eachother our whole lifes. I like "internet friendship". Its... so easy. And in some ways, I like it better than the real life friendships I got. Which might sound abit fucked up. But, its true.

I don't think that you can call a person you know on the internet a true friend, unless you have met them in person at some point, for the very reason stated above, you don't really know the people that you only type at as it were. I have spoken on the phone and webcam to some people that I've met on gaming sites, but even there I wouldn't call them friends. To me a friend is someone who you can go running to when you're stuck or call up for a good bitch in the pub, can't expect an internet friend to drive 50 miles to get you when you miss the bus!

Well, it all depends. I believe that you can't really make friends over the internet per se, but that you can lay the basis for a friendship, or even a relationship. In fact, I've done both of these before, with mixed successes.

To me a friend is someone who you can go running to when you're stuck or call up for a good bitch in the pub
I'd beg to differ about that to some extent. Of course, that's what I often do with my friends, but considering that I switch between two locations, and hence between circles of friends, it can occur at times that I just bitch about life, the universe and everything over the phone or via MSN to friends.

That's what I said silly, you know the people you're talking to in RL so they can be friends, I'm not saying that all contact has to be face to face.

Oh yes you did you bought me the Shivering Isles expansion, you know me too well.
