    Auferstanden Aus Ruinen

Auferstanden aus Ruinen (Risen from the Ruins)

Auferstanden aus Ruinen used to be the national anthem of the German Democratic Republic (from 1949 to 1990- when it was replaced by the anthem of West Germany).

    Auferstanden aus Ruinen
    und der Zukunft zugewandt,
lasst uns Dir zum Guten dienen,
    Deutschland, einig Vaterland.
Alte Not gilt es zu zwingen,
    und wir zwingen sie vereint,
denn es muss uns doch gelingen,
dass die Sonne schön wie nie
    über Deutschland scheint,
    über Deutschland scheint.

    Glück und Friede sei beschieden
    Deutschland, unserm Vaterland.
Alle Welt sehnt sich nach Frieden,
    reicht den Völkern eure Hand.
    Wenn wir brüderlich uns einen,
    schlagen wir des Volkes Feind.
Lasst das Licht des Friedens scheinen,
    dass nie eine Mutter mehr
    ihren Sohn beweint,
    ihren Sohn beweint.

Lasst uns pflügen, lasst uns bauen,
lernt und schafft wie nie zuvor,
    und der eignen Kraft vertrauend
    steigt ein frei Geschlecht empor.
    Deutsche Jugend, bestes Streben
    unsres Volks in dir vereint,
    wirst du Deutschlands neues Leben.
Und die Sonne schön wie nie
    über Deutschland scheint,
    über Deutschland scheint.

    English translation.

    Risen from the ruins
    and faced towards the future,
Let us serve you for the good,
    Germany, united fatherland.
Old woes have to be conquered,
    and united so we shall,
For we must be successful for once
that the sun, beautiful as never before,
    Shines over Germany,
    shines over Germany.

Happiness and peace may be granted
    Germany, our fatherland.
All the world longs for peace,
so go forth and extend your hand.
    When as brothers we unite,
    we defeat the people's foe.
Let shine the light of Peace
so that no mother ever again must
    Mourn her son,
    mourn her son.

Let us plough, let us build,
do learn and work as never before,
And, with confidence in its own strength,
a free generation will come forth.
    German youth, the best endeavor
of our people combined in you,
You will be Germany's new life.
And the sun, more beautiful than ever
    Shine over Germany,
    shine over Germany.

Here's a version with lyrics and images of East Germany:
    Hymne Der DDR

The text is written by Johannes R. Becher and the music is by Hanns Eisler. The text is not as communist oriented as other communist anthems however its lyrics were rarely sung at official events. The last East German Parliament wanted to make this anthem the anthem of the united Germany, but West Germany didn't agree.

Has anyone tried this? Try playing the instrumental version of the current German anthem but singing the lyrics of Auferstanden aus Ruinen instead. It matches somehow. :

The funny parallel is that both German states had national anthems that weren't sung. In the west only the third verse got sung, from 1974 in the east there were no more lyrics at all. Nice example for government afraid of their own citizens.
And all my youth passed by sad-hearted,
    the joy of Spring was never mine;
Autumn blows through me dread of parting,
and my heart dreams and longs to die.

    - Nikolaus Lenau (1802-1850)

Real misanthropes are not found in solitude, but in the world; since it is experience of life, and not philosophy, which produces real hatred of mankind.

    - Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837)

I have a question about this. I'm aware that in the West only the 3rd stanza is sung, but what does that have to do with the government being afraid of its own citizens? Don't some of the citizens of West Germany wish to sign the entire anthem? Doesn't the censorship come from the government?

A national anthem is for and from the people, it does not belong to the government. So if any government interfers with the text of national anthems it means they are afraid of their own people because when the sing the original version the may realize that the yankees, Russkies, Tommies and Froggers have replaced Germany by bloodless, lifeless artifical administrative units under foreign tutelage.

    the joy of Spring was never mine;
Autumn blows through me dread of parting,
and my heart dreams and longs to die.

Well as far as I heard it's not illegal to sing the other verses of the anthem, so if people really want to sing it, they can, can't they?

Yes, that's because Becher wrote the lyrics to match Haydn's "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser", the same melody which inspired the Deutschlandlied. See the link The Lawspeaker posted for more information.

Sure, and on some special occasions we even do that in public. In these times of hysterical uneducated mass-orchestrated it is not uncommon however, that you get immediately arrested for it. Basically because only the biggest retards, uniform fetishists and character swine become copss around here.

Come to think of it is bad enough that this Republik der Strolche still sings the third stanza. Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben would go postal about that.

Why do you get arrested for it if it's not illegal? I assume they will have to let you go sooner or later.
