Obama Plays His White Card !

Barack Obama in Kansas on family roots quest

Toby Harnden in El Dorado, Kansas
    Telegraph 30/01/2008

Barack Obama today took his presidential campaign to the rural Kansas town where his white mother grew up and declared: "We're family."

It was his first visit to El Dorado, a former oil boom town with a tiny black population in America's conservative heartland of Kansas.eyes:

His aim, he said beforehand, was to "talk about the roots of my life that directly connect to the broader story of the country" by outlining his lineage on his mother's side, less familiar than his exotic Kenyan ancestry and childhood spent in Hawaii and Jakarta.

Barack Obama speaks at a rally in El Dorado. Kansas has not voted for a Democratic candidate since 1964

The pilgrimage to the place where his grandparents met as high school sweethearts was a way of placing himself firmly in the mainstream of American experience.

Mr Obama, 46, who could become the first black American president, told a crowd of 2,300 crammed into a high school gym that El Dorado was part of the "story I've lived", one that "spans miles and generations, races and realities".

His grandparents Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, who partly raised him, lived in El Dorado until 1955, when his mother Ann was 13. Five years later she married his Kenyan father after they met at the University of Hawaii.

"It's a story that began here, in El Dorado, when a young man fell in love with a young woman who grew up down the road in Augusta," said Mr Obama.eyes:

"They came of age in the midst of the Depression, where he found odd jobs on small farms and oil rigs, always dodging the bank failures and foreclosures that were sweeping the nation."

Mr Obama's Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, is concentrating on party's Democratic strongholds of California, New York, New Jersey and her one-time home state of Arkansas in advance of Super Tuesday next week, when 22 states hold primaries.

But Mr Obama set out on a cross-country trip designed to show he can generate wider appeal and broaden the base of his party as well as taking the edge off the advantage Mrs Clinton has among core Democrats and union members.

"Our family's story is one that spans miles and generations; races and realities," he said. "It's the story of farmers and soldiers; city workers and single moms.eyes:
"It takes place in small towns and good schools, in Kansas and Kenya, on the shores of Hawaii and the streets of Chicago. It's a varied and unlikely journey, but one that's held together by the same simple dream. And that is why it's American."

As Mr Obama's motorcade sped through the snowy flatlands of Kansas en route to El Dorado, it passed the Nodding Donkeys that mark the places where oil is still pumped up.

Opinion polls give Mrs Clinton a clear lead in most Super Tuesday states but Mr Obama is hoping for powerful momentum from his overwhelming win in South Carolina on Saturday and a full-throated endorsement on Monday from Senator Ted Kennedy, President John F. Kenedy's youngest brother....................

Kansas also votes on Super Tuesday but has just 40 delegates at stake compared to 441 in California - nearly a quarter of those needed to win.
Mr Obama hopes to run Mrs Clinton close in the big states, where delegates are allocated proportionately, but also score in Republican "red states" like Kansas, Utah, Idaho and Alaska. He has 18 staff in Kansas compared to just three for Mrs Clinton and began his "ground operation" there three months before she did............

It doesn't matter if his mother was White. In America he he is still Black. And he's not going to be elected president. He can play the part of spoiler & keep the Democrats from winning the White in November, but he'll never be elected president.

He is black, but what if he wasn't? Is he the most qualified? The smartest? Set aside he is black & may possibly do for the black race...what if he wasn't black, would he win?

If he wasn't Black the media wouldn't be making such a fuss about him. He wouldn't be a US senator, let alone a serious candidate for the Democratic nomination for US president. All the excitement about Obama is media hype. It's like someone else has already said, it's like American Idol. Obama mania is all hype, take away his Blackness & what is there?

I don't think the American soceity will blindly fall for Mrs Clinton's card on sexism and gender neither on Barack Obama's cards, based on race and ethnicity, but based on which types politics would gives them a better standard of living, educations and employments. Let hope so.

I´ve some questions to the Americans here :

Do you think that McCain is going to be the presidental candidate for the Republicans now? He has won Florida and all commentors say that he is "over the bridge" now...
Or does Romney has a chance nonetheless?

Do you think that McCain has a chance against Obama/Clinton? I think most of the real conservative republicans find McCain too liberal, do you think they´d vote for him anyway?

And why is Huckabee not giving up, declaring that his supporters and followers should vote for Romney now? Maybe this is the only chance to stop the more liberal McCain some meters before finish?

If you have anyBlack at all in you, you're Black. I think that shows how much people don't want to to be White. Like Tiger Woods, if you read on his ancestry, he's Chinese and all sorts of things, and not all that Black. Which is obvious because he doesn't look super ugly.

Do you think that McCain is going to be the presidential candidate for the Republicans now? Yes,& I think he will win the election also.
Or does Romney has a chance nonetheless? He will not Win the Election

Do you think that McCain has a chance against Obama/Clinton? I'm sure Obama & Clinton will get plenty of votes but I'd almost lay money down on McCain winning & why you ask? Because he is probably the most "qualified" for the job.(considering who we have to vote for)

McCain has been a favorite of both the liberal & neocon press for years. Both would like to see him get the Republican nomination. But Romney is a wealthy man & can continue to pursue the nomination. Money is not a problem for him. The reason candidates drop out of the race is usually money. McCain got 36% of the Florida vote v. Romney's 31%, but the Florida primary was a winner take all contest. That won't happen in most of Tuesdays primaries. If Romney does well Tuesday he can still beat McCain. I'm personally loath to vote for McCain for President. I would rather have Hillary for president then McCain. At least Hillary doesn't call herself a conservative & we know what she is. Most Americans don't know much about McCain except he was a pow & he calls himself "conservative." McCain is a mean, lying, vengeful, self-serving, hypocritical bastard. I can still remember the campaign ads in Arizona everytime he was up for reelection, showing him returning to the US from the pow camp in Vietnam & playing up on the fact he spent 6-years in a Vietnamese prison . That is his basic message, "I was a pow, I was tortured, I DESERVE YOUR VOTE. And don't criticize me, I WAS A POW!" If he hadn't been a pow, I don't think he would of had a political carreer.

Do you think that McCain has a chance against Obama/Clinton? I think most of the real conservative republicans find McCain too liberal, do you think they´d vote for him anyway?
It could go either way. Real conservatives have been taken for granted by the Republican party. They may not vote if it is McCain v. Hillary . After all, we already had 8-years of a Bill-Hillary administration, at least we know what we're in for. Obama may bring out more voters opposed to having a Black president. At some point, if McCain is the nominee, the fact that the late father of his pill-popping wife had ties to organize crime will come up. And someone might mention the time during the Clinton era when McCain joked while speaking at a public dinner that "The reason Chelsea Clinton is ugly is because her father is Janet Reno" McCain is the one person who could actually make Hillary look sympathetic.

And why is Huckabee not giving up, declaring that his supporters and followers should vote for Romney now? Maybe this is the only chance to stop the more liberal McCain some meters before finish?
Maybe he wants enough delegates to play kingmaker at the Republican convention, if no one has a majority of delegates to win the nomination on the first ballot. Huckabee is probably hoping to be the VP nominee which he can use as a springboard to seek the Republican nomination in 2012 (if the Dems win this year) or 2016 (assuming the Republican wins & seeks reelection in 2012).
