Grin Man hides unapproved house behind hay bales

A farmer, Robert Fidler, in England who couldn't get approval to build a house on his own land for his family went ahead & did it anyway, hiding the house behind a stack of hay bales. Mr. Fidler is attempting to take advantage of a rule that allows buildings erected without planning permission to be declared legal if no objections have been made after four years. After four years the hay bales came down but the local planning comission is still attempting to tear down the house because "they didn't know about until recently." I think Mr. Fidler should be allowed to keep his house. He built it on his property. Why should he maintain his land as a undeveloped greenspace to provide a bucolic rural view for his neighbors? If the government wants to maintain it as greenspace let them buy it on the open market at it's fair market value, not the value placed on it by government regulations.

Before and after: the castle built behind a wall of straw

A farmer has been ordered to tear down a castle he had hidden behind an enormous stack of straw for four years.

Councillors had no idea the building, complete with ramparts, turrets and a cannon, existed until the barricade of several hundred 8ft by 4ft bales was torn down.

Robert Fidler, 59, spent two years constructing his dream home behind the straw shield before moving in his wife Linda and their son Harry, 7, in 2002.

The father-of-six says he built the structure out of despair after applications to construct a home on his farm in Salfords, Surrey, were repeatedly turned down by council planners.

He hid it from view hoping it would be considered legal after standing for four years.

Examples such as this one give me hope. I am continually sickened by the erosion of property "rights" (yes, I know the statists out there will dispute this right even exists) by big government. It's good to see someone standing up to bureaucratic bullying. I think the home looks marvelous, btw.

This reminds me of beginning of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I find it heartless the council is so willing to demolish the home of a family and an aging man. I thought Green Belts were established to "preserve rural communities", which Fidler has a right to be part of seeing as how he owns the land. Others have houses there, why can't he? He could argue that he has benefited the Green Belt by providing nesting areas for birds, which have now been torn down by the very people who seek to protect the wildlife in the Green Belt. I would say he has used his land in a manner that does not overstep the policy of the Green Belt. If the government was planning to trespass onto my property with a bulldozer aiming for my house, I'd shoot them. I hope Robert and his family attempt to protest the decision of the council by remaining in the house.

I remember an argument I had with the local town planner after an objection was lodged by a neighbour because we wanted to build a 5 ft high fence around our property. He had the hide to tell me that we shouldn'tve bought a block of land without a fence! Needless to say, I tore strips of this bloke, and told him in no uncertain terms that the neighbour (we had to draw a plan and show him??????) had actually misread the plan and that the fence would be much lower down because the council strip lays on an embankment, roughly about 5ft below street level!

Not only did our fence get approved, we also set a precedent when one of our neighbours further up the road encountered the same problem! Because this bloked exploited a loophole, the Council are no doubt worried about a precedent being set in this manner. But they're going to have a hard time forcing this bloke to knock his house down, and good on him - for standing up to the bully boys! :

I really can't see their problem and the reason as to why they have to demolish it. It's monstrous!

It looks fantastic its such a shame he may have to remove it. I feel sorry for the guy alot of money and efford went into that. They would rather we all lived in row after row of houses each one looking the same everyone thinking the same and liking all the same things. Im sure the people living around him must have complained about it too which made the council react.

Well, what kind of neighbours are that? I couldn't have lived with jealous neighbours who could have taken every opportunity to ruin me.
