He didn't reign for very long but Edward VIII has my utmost respect.

The world today could have been very different had he not been forced to abdicate

King Arthur (whether he was a real or apocryphal figure) is the English monarch that captures my imagination the most.

After him comes Harold Godwinson, the last of the Anglo-Saxon kings.

    Empress Matilda (1102-1167)
-Daughter of Henry I and Queen Maud
-Married to Henry V, Emperor of Germany and the Holy Roman Empire
-Fought against her cousin, Stephen, to win the throne of England for herself and her descendants
    -Was noted for her charity
'Well, what are you?" said the Pigeon. "I can see you're trying to invent something!" "I-I'm a little girl," said Alice, rather doubtfully. She found herself at last in a beautiful garden, among the bright flower-beds and the cool fountains.

The only good thing about this feud was that Stephen turned out to be the last of the Norman monarchs

From Anglo-Saxon slave to Frankish queen, St. Balthild
-Purchased by a Frankish noble to serve at his court
    -Married Clovis II
-Mother to two kings, Chlotar III and Childeric II
-Committed to the reform of the Frankish church
-Possibly instrumental in the reunification of three parts of the Merovingian kingdom
-Was very charitable, and commanded parts of the royal funds for alms
    -Prohibited infanticide
    -Forbid trade in Christian captives

Good choice, jagdmesser! I was fascinated with his wife, Empress Elisabeth of Austria, and I enjoyed the Sissi trilogy.

I'm also intrigued by Queen Cynethryth, wife of King Offa

-Her origins are obscure, but legend said she was related to Frankish emperor, Charlemagne
-Was sent out to sea in an open boat for some crime (very melodramatic!)
-The youthful Offa supposedly found her, fell in love with her, and married her
-She had the title not only of queen, but of dispensatrix domus ('controller of the household')
-Her name and effigy appear on coins
-After Offa's death she became abbess of Bedeford and Cookham
