I don't really have any warm feelings for absolute monarchy and rule-by-birthright, there's very little to admire about monarchies after the Middle Ages. That said, I do have admiration for the kings who respected their nation and did great things for their people, the kings who fought on the battlefield alongside their footsoldiers. A few of my favorite European monarchs would be:

Charles Martel - king of the Franks, and defender of Europe against the Muslim hordes. Famous for smashing the Moorish invasion at the Battle of Tours, stopping the Muslim invasion in its tracks. Defeat would've meant that Europe would fall into Islamic darkness, and the mixed races from North Africa would have poured into continental Europe. Thanks to the victory of the Franks, white Europe was saved from destruction at that point.
Otto the Great - the Saxon king who led the German defense against the Magyars, an invading Asian race who stormed into Europe. After he crushed them at the Battle of Lechfeld, the Magyars would never threaten Europe again. Otto's victory was so complete that nothing remains of the Magyars, except for their name (which is used by the modern-day Hungarians, an unrelated European people). The original Asian Magyars were totally annihilated.
Emperor Augustus - the first Roman emperor. Found Rome as a city of brick and left it a city of marble. Extended the Roman empire to a massive size, while creating a peace that lasted for 200 years. The coolest thing is that he lived like a normal citizen and never held an official position, but kept up a semblance of democracy the whole time. I also like him for passing the first race laws in history (his laws against ethnic Romans marrying freed slaves).

I've always admired Arminius as well, the way he defeated the Roman invasion was brilliant. I also like that he was an elected tribal leader, and not a spoiled little prince who sat on the throne because of who his father was. The Germanic tribes had the custom of electing the chieftain, which ensured that only the most smart and capable men were leaders.

(His real name was probably "Irmin", the old Germanic form, and not "Hermann", which is a later invention by German authors. Either that was his name, or "Arminius" was just a nickname given by the Romans and his real name was something else entirely.)

My own favorite king would be a Swedish classic, Karl XII. He's much more fascinating than our other warrior king, Gustav Adolf, and many nationalists still admire him. Sure, he did bring Sweden's imperial era to an end, but at least we went out with a bang.

Another good one would be Peter the Great, who defeated Karl XII and turned Russia into a superpower.

Der Alte Fritz. He was a renaissance man from a prestigious German family and he just happen to have the resources of one of the world's coolest nations ever at his disposal. I would happily fight in this man's army.

    Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204)

-She accompanied her husband, King Louis VII of France, on the Second Crusade
-She was mother to two kings, Richard and John
    -She was a literary patron
-She was apparently so stylish and elegant that she invoked the ire of Bernard of Clairvaux (!)
Let us not desire delights, daughters; we are well-off here; the bad inn lasts for only a night.
    -St. Teresa of Avila

The region of Aquitaine had a rather bizarre status, being sometimes 'English' and at other times 'French'.

It really depended on who Eleanor was married to but anyway, via marriage she became Queen of both England and France during her lifetime.

In addition to this she produced several other monarchs in these two countries (I forget how many kids she had - quite a few!) so she was a hugely significant figure.

I'll have to go with Swedish ones, because I barely know of any others.

Erik XIV. Not as ruler, perhaps, but as historical character. A tragic person, probably insane, but very intelligent. There's something Shakespearean about him, even though it can be difficult to get at the "true Erik" from the data available to us.

Karl XII. Again, not as a ruler (he had no sense of economy, unlike his brilliant father), but his personality is fascinating. Molded in accordance with royal ideals at the time, burdened by his destiny and painfully lonely at times, yet with a furiously strong mind. And his battles. How much was bravery, how much was death wish? We'll never know.
