Richard the Lionhearted and Kaiser Wilhelm II

Two great men misunderstood by fools of their particular era.

    Name Your Favorite European Monarch/s

I'm an American and don't believe in Monarchs.
Remember, America started a Revolution to remove the shackles of a country that believed in so-called "Royal Blood."

I'd rather have a monarch or a tribal leader.

A tribal leader would be better.

From a purely English/British perspective, my favourite monarchs would be ...

    1) Harold Godwinson, the last great Anglo-Saxon King. Ones of England's finest warriors who died sword-in-hand at the head of his troops.

    2) Alfred The Great, whose achievements surpass those of any other English monarch before or since.

    3) King Arthur, despite there being an element of myth surrounding him and even doubts as to his actual existence, but second to none as an inspirational figure.

My list would have to stop there because after Godwinson we became saddled with the French for the next few centuries and over-zealous Christianity for even longer. The post-medieval monarchs been a pretty poor sample, although Victoria captured the public's imagination and was generally well liked. A special mention also to Edward VIII, who was sympathetic to the NS cause and could have changed Europe's recent history quite dramatically had he stuck around for a bit longer

Rudolf I of Habsburg who acted as one of the most loyal commanders of Frederick II in Swabia and Italy. Then reestablished Germany after the Interregium winning the biggest knight battle in the process.

Béla IV of Hungary: Defeated the Mongolian Invasions.

Sigismund I of Luxemburg: "I am king of the Romans and above grammar"

Frederick III of Habsburg: Once reduced just to control of the city of Innsbruck but handed over to his son most of Southern and Western Germany.

I think history has yet to see a perfect leader, but if I had to chose one to call my favorite I'd chose Armenius (Hermann) because despite (probably) being more capable than any subsequent monarch who was born into their position of power, he never got a chance to rule over a united Germania. For this reason he retains an aura of mystery and legend.

Back then leaders were not brought up in a sheltered environment, they were hardened by battle and constant struggle for survival. They rose to power through a process of natural selection, not by artificial means.

Edward Longshanks. Kicked out the bloody Jews and put England on a path to greatness. And I don't know if he really did this, but it's fun to think he did. :

....hm, well. I'm an American who does in fact believe in the power of Royalty.

    Chlodovech (Clovis)

Karl der Grossen (Charlemagne, Vater Europas )

Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa

    Julius & Augustus Caesar

    Vercingetorix

    Napoleon Bonaparte

    Brennus (4th century BC)

Can't say I have much respect for Hitler as a contender for Greatest European monarchs in hindsight. Just one of the bastard children of Modernity who struck lucky, a guy who's loyalists will eternally have a chip on their soldier.
