What is the Meaning of Your Life?

What is the Meaning of Life?

A question I’m sure we’ve all asked ourselves at one time or another. What have you answered to yourself?

One time I was sitting on a boat dock eating my lunch. I was watching the birds flying around, the fish jumping out of the water, the turtles popping their heads up, and whatever else was going on. I thought ..

“They are all doing their Thing. The birds live in bird world. The fish live in fish world. The turtles live in turtle world. It seems that instinct gives to them all the meaning of life they need and reproducing their world lives again. Do I have instincts? What is the meaning of my life? In what world do I live in? Will my world live again? If I have instincts don’t they seem something akin to open and subject to imprinting either from society or myself? Do I find meaning of life in my society or finding it lacking can I not create my own? Cannot the keeping of oath guarantee my relative society living again as absolutely as an animals instinct? Cannot the keeping of my oaths be the meaning I make out of my life?”

    Thanks and Later,
    -Lyfing

We give the universe meaning because without us, the universe would be unwitnessed.

As I see it life does not have a goal, it is a process and its meaning is in how we live it. To fulfil that meaning I believe that we have to, as Lyfing points out, to follow our instincts, our internal compulsions. So then, what is the meaning of my life? That, I am sorry to say, I do not really know.

In order to do this we must live in a society organised according to our needs and according to these internal compulsions, and I do believe that the act of organising and building such a society is a vital component to the process of living our lives. I firmly believe that it is only within such a society that we can fully realise ourselves. But basically it is a life that gives a sense of belonging, community and satisfaction, to be an integrated and productive member of a society of my people. To feel an intimate connection to the group and to see a clear relevance of my work to the well-being of the whole.

Much like the lives our ancestors lived a long time ago, but with central heating and electricity.

Monty Python covered this very phrase rather well in the movie by the same name IMO.

Another question would be what is the meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything?

For me, I think my life's goal is to learn as many lessons as possible and shape a character which will be continued in to a next life; until, after many lives, I finally "move on" to a new realm.

Non-Spiritually, I think my life's goal is to protect my family, learn as much as I can, knowledge-wise but also in practical things.
    Perfection.

About the only thing that gives me pleasure on a regular basis is the discovery of new things and new ideas. I consider this activity a form of self-directed growth, self-creation even.

For me the best feeling of all, is to create something, or achieve something that I am extremely proud of. Even to have a hope that such an achievement might be within my grasp is an experience worth chasing, even if that hope is short-lived and ends up being dashed time and time again. It's not a feeling I've had more than once actually.

The closest that the average person comes to this is probably in having children, and indeed it has been theorised that the compulsion to create; a work of Art or a business or whatever, is actually a sublimated form of the reproductive drive.

If one is unable to create something of unique value on ones own, then the next best thing is to feel one is making a worthwhile contribution to some larger goal or purpose.

the meaning of my life is to live it and to try and do what i want to whenever possible.

if i had to define a goal, i would say it is to be happy, which means satisfying my curiosity.

or at least that's what i think right now

I think there is no absolute meaning to any life, and that we give our lives meaning (or occasionally have our lives given meaning by others or by social context). For me I am playing this role of "me" with these values. I am trying to uphold these values that "I" have as best I can whilst following the physical laws of the universe. This is enough "rules" to make the "game" interesting. So I keep playing.

It's like an RPG, except that its actually happening.

Twice I have found the game to become dull for a lack of structure, at these times I made extra rules for myself to make it more interesting. Once was the first time I ever committed to anything - which was to always seek out truth (which was made very difficult by the fact I have a tendency toward subjectivism - but certainly made things more interesting). The second was when I made a commitment to my people.
A* I’m a dreadful reactionary, Mrs. Helena. I don’t like this progress one bit.
    H* Like Nana.
A* Yes, like Nana. Does Nana have a prayer book?
    H* A big fat one.
A* And are there prayers in it for various occurrences in life? Against storms? Against illness?
H* Against temptation, against floods -
A* But not against progress, I suppose?
    H* > I think not.
    A* That’s a shame.

Life has no meaning, from a gene-centered evolutionary view.
