Do You Have Ancestors/Family from Former German Territories?

Do you have ancestors/family from former German territories like Prussia, South Tyrol, etc. and what is their story, if you like to share?

Did they immigrate to Germany or did they and their families remain there?

If they remained there, did they become e.g. polonized or did they hold on to their German heritage?

There is a lot of fuss about the Germans who want their former properties from what is now Poland given back to them or at least reparations paid, do your ancestors feel the same?

Finally, do they have any hopes for Germany to regain these lost territories?

I know I had ancestors emigrate from some village called Schrotz in West Prussia, but I have no idea what it's called now. I suppose it's possible I still have some distantly related family living there, but I doubt I'd ever really find out.

    Thanks for the link!

It would be interesting to see pictures of it now, but I don't have high hopes for it considering it's been part of Poland for quite a while now. Who knows what they did to it

My last ancestors to arrive in the US came from Graudenz, West Prussia (now Grudziadz Poland) in the late 1800s. I went back there a few years ago, the place is a dump now. Don't expect to see it ever returned to Germany, and too many more important battles to focus on, like the 3rd world invasion of lands we currently inhabit.

I've quite a few ancestors from Alsace-Lorraine that trace back to the Frankish aristocracy, but nothing more recent than the 16th century.

My maternal grandfather was half W-Prussian. My mom used to be very proud of the fact & always told me when I was young "your grandfather was half german".

    :thumb001:

He was half Northumbrian too so I consider him fully germanic.

This is all rather murky since this particular ancestor came to the US in 1848 but as best as I can determine he came from Alsace-Loraine.

but really we don't know.....but some of the stories from his time as a prison farmer were..... well odd as "they" the people in charge would let him go to the local pub and dances with the local women! the only thing was to be back by work time.....its got me stuffed i was under the impression that the Germans hated the poles during WW2:033102st:

My grt Grandma(Bertha) was Prussian descent, her Prussian grandad went to England and his son emigrated to Australia. After WW1 they 'anglocised' their name to fit in out here.
