Northern Germany is the geographic area in the north of Germany. The native German concept of northern Germany is called Norddeutschland.

    Northern German States
If the term Northern German States is used the following Federal States of Germany are meant:

    Bremen
    Hamburg
    Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
    Lower Saxony
    Schleswig-Holstein

What would ya call it then? :

They have traditional costumes all over Germany, or in rural areas that is, they stem from farmer communities anyway.
I am not sure if the word "Trachten" is used above the Weißwurst-belt though.

But Phleg is right about NRW, with the "Pot" being a collection of industrial workers, and the historical Prussian dominance, the closest you could call traditional costums is either a military uniform, or a Kumpel-outfit:

"Nothing is more disgusting than the majority: because it consists of a few powerful predecessors, of rogues who adapt themselves, of weak who assimilate themselves, and the masses who imitate without knowing at all what they want." (Johann Wolfgang Goethe)

    Here here.

And I am not entirely sure what Frankish Folk costumes look like, I've never seen anyone wearing them. I guess walking around with a large war-axe and no shirt works fine.

    This is a dialect map.

I know it's a dialect map. How do folks define the regions of Germany, if not dialectally + geographically?

North = yellow = Low German
Central = blue = Middle German
South = green = Upper German

Ah, well, if it's purely geographically, then wouldn't Mitteldeutschland be these 3 regions:

Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. Where do you see Lower Saxony? :p

But anyways, maybe Lower Saxony wasn't my best pick. Here ya go, Trachten from Schleswig-Holstein, can't get anymore North than that.

    Helgoländer Tracht

    Föhringer Tracht

    Probsteier Tracht

Oh yea, I wear the California traditionals of a tee shirt, shorts and athletic shoes in the summer. In winter, keep the tee shirt but overlay sweatshirt, jacket, cap, Levi-Strauss blue jeans, athletic shoes to snow boots--all depending upon weather.

Why am I always easily recognizable as an American in airports?
