    Your favorite topics

So, I was thinking of this to try to stimulate more highbrow discussion since there has been so much whining about lowbrow... List your favorite highbrow topics here and since I enjoy playing with the search function I'll dig up some threads on these topics for you from all over the forum. If you find anything interesting that satisfies your needs, you can reply to them and get a discussion going.

Additionally I could start some of the threads on your favorite topics myself if I have the time/patience/material.

Whatcha think, shall we try it out?

My favorite highbrow topics are metaphysics, biochemistry, sociobiology, etymology and "minor shift theory". I don't know what the latter most is actually called, if it has a real name, but it is the practice of changing a small detail in a historical event and plotting out everything that may have been different as the result of it or everything that would have needed to be different to cause it.

There are some others, but you could start with those. I have a lot to say on each topic, but am not inclined toward starting my own threads about them at the moment.

    Good idea.

    Here's one for a start:

Favorite Germanic words and their etymology

Even if it maybe not quite what you meant, still a good occasion to get some activity running in the linguistics forum which was pretty much dead.

We had a "word of the moment" thread on the forum I used to admin. Quite similar, I found it useful and a lot of our English as a Foreign Language users did, as well. Not to mention our moronic English as a First and Only Language users... ugh.

I'm more into name/genealogical etymology, but I will seek to contribute to the thread soon.

My interests are broad. General politics interest me, particularly those of England and the British Isles; as well one may have noticed my enthusiasm for urban geography and geography in general. This isn't all of my interests, just I am not in the mood for a list.

@ Freydis, here's a thread with just one reply

Nationalism, Racialism and Early British Socialism

Don't know if it's your cup of tea, but thought I should mention it.

    The British National Party

Wow, only 3 replies for such a popular topic on these forums. Few thread views as well. :

    New one:

    English Civic Nationalism

@ Doc, now that's some topics you've got there. I'll see what I can do.
