Schengen East - immigrations new backdoor!

Worries as EU's Schengen borders expand east

    Telegraph 16/12/2007

Just one porous border will stand between most of Europe and tens of thousands of illegal immigrants under changes that take effect on Friday.

Illegal immigrants, captured by Ukrainian border guards while trying to cross into Europe, queue for breakfast in a detention camp

Hungary and Poland are among nine recent additions to the European Union who will join most other members in throwing open their EU frontiers to travel without a passport.

Under the latest expansion of the Schengen agreement, countries such as Germany and Austria will stop checking people entering from the east, and anyone who can make his or her way over the 1,800 miles of borders from the Baltic to the Adriatic will be able to travel throughout most of the EU without being checked.

Border officials have already reported an upsurge in people trying to cross the EU's new outer frontier. Britain has not signed up to the Schengen zone , but many of those heading for the eastern frontier say they want to cross the Channel.:

Franco Frattini, the EU's commissioner for security, described the expansion of the EU's free movement zone as a "quite nice Christmas gift" to the people of central and eastern Europe!!

But Knut Paul, the head of Germany's police trade union, has warned that the new Schengen members will not be able to defend the EU's borders. "We are exposing ourselves to the threat of being swamped by criminals and illegal immigrants," he said.

On its visit to the border between Hungary and the Ukraine, The Sunday Telegraph found evidence of serious weaknesses in controls over immigrants from outside the EU. Officials said that they caught fewer than a third of those attempting to cross illegally.

Roger Helmer, a Conservative MEP, said levels of immigration were "completely out of control… These changes will make things even more difficult. The border between the UK and the Continent is not insuperable."

    -----------------------------

Utterly absurd . We need to rapidly upgrade our Border Controls and deportation procedures. There are some signs that the UK government, under massive criticism, is doing just that eyes: . And the others?

Illegal immigrants ready at EU's new border

    Telegraph 16/12/2007

The deputy commander of the European Union's new border post was anxious. "Is the camera switched on?" he whispered to his colleagues. Heads shook. "Sort it out," he ordered them quietly, not realising he was being overheard.

Worries as EU's Schengen borders expand east

An officer hurried down a corridor of the small brick building, on the frontier between Hungary and Ukraine, to switch on a television monitor and look busy.

Moments later, as The Sunday Telegraph was escorted into his office, he was in front of his screen, panning the camera across the drab Hungarian countryside, apparently searching for illegal immigrants attempting to sneak in from the east.

But the logbook at his elbow showed that the last shift had finished hours earlier and no one was on duty now.

This is the reality of Europe's new eastern frontier, 1,800 miles long, from Estonia in the north to Slovenia in the south. From Friday, it will be the only line of defence against tens of thousands of would-be immigrants drawn inexorably towards the EU every year.

Under rules which take effect on Friday, anyone inside this frontier will be able to travel between countries without having to show a passport.

Hungary, Poland and other countries that became EU members in 2004 are joining the "Schengen" area, within which there are no internal border controls.

There will no longer be checks on anyone entering Germany and Austria from the east. And although Britain is not within the zone, illegal immigrants will be free to roam all the way to the French side of the Channel.

The intention is to make it easier for European citizens to move around, but word has spread quickly to those dreaming of a new life in the West.

Somalis, Afghans, Iraqis, Mongolians, Georgians and Kosovan Serbs and Albanians are beating a path to the border, eager to try their luck.

They do so with good reason. Beregsurany sits on a short, fenced section of the border, about 175 miles east of Budapest. Last week, a line of cars waited to be searched by the guards and customs officers. But only the naive try to get in this way.

Most illegal immigrants cross in the surrounding countryside, often at night. The border here is an undulating landscape of fields and thick birch forest, mostly unfenced.

Many make it across, with Hungarian officials estimating that less than a third of those who try to enter illegally are intercepted.

Local residents have become accustomed to seeing small groups of dishevelled immigrants resting in their gardens.

Martha Varga, who runs the village shop in Beregdaroc, two miles from the main crossing point, said: "I don't think it's hard for them to get across the border. We saw a group of Afghans caught in someone's back yard a month ago."

With the new rules on the way, more and more are trying to get in.....................

..................But the guards' task is enormous. The fixed camera can monitor no more than 10 of the 16 miles of border in that sector, and operators admit that much of the border is obscured by trees or high ground.

Guards pull over occasional vehicles for checks. But on a cold December day, many stayed in their EU-bought cars as a stream of vehicles sped west, away from the border.

In the shop in Beregdaroc, George Kiss, 52, a nightwatchman, said it was a far cry from the days when Soviet electric fences sealed the border. "Illegal immigrants are coming day and night," he said. "They are just coming and coming and coming."

    -------------------------------------

Europe needs to take this more seriously. At least the British kept out of this nonsense and are considering a vague attempt at further border control ..................

Schengen East - immigrations new backdoor!

Nothing could, in the opinion of the informed, be a more direct threat to the immigration condition of Germanic Europe than what is currently happening in the east ...... and yet , there seems to be little interest in such things at the Althing!!

I myself had a busy time at work yesterday. But yes the expansion East of the EU also lead to serious errosion of bordercontrol. Also the fact that the more Westward countries are stopping the checking is worrying movement. Al the general pardons/amensties, that may be called so, also doesn't work either. Also of course mayors that declare their counties/cities free havens for illegals are a problem.

Al this combined of course makes the tiny efforts of those few membercountries even less insignificant than they already where.

thanks for your comment here. I am certain that this is an issue. I know that the German Police actually had a demonstration -- knowing full well what chaos it will ( is?) causing. Whilst Britain is not a memeber, many of these asiatic illegals want to come here. Our useless Government isn't up to stopping them it seems!! Hence our concern...........

The whole point about Schengen is to remove border controls and stoppings. Once they breakthrough the often flimsy eastern borders -- they can go anywhere, it seems.

Thats complete madness when we are confronted by such massive invasion pressures!

I don't think the political leaders of Europe want to control immigration. Border security is not that complicated. The DDR & Czechoslovakia both had secure borders for the purpose of keeping people in. The same could be done to keep people out. The Israelis have built a fence to protect themselves from suicide bombers from the West Bank & Gaze Strip. But it has been at the expense of cutting off the supply of cheap Palestinian labor. Border secuirty is not a problem of logistics but of political willpower.

The Slovaks are trying one reads --- but the Polish , bordering Belarus and Ukraine ( already with plenty of Asian hopeful's!!) - will be under such pressure that the German police do fear a breakdown in their control capacity . Thousands of the worst are expected; major riots are surely justified!!
