We need a tax on stupid ideas ...

You cannot help noticing how Professor Walters and their ilk focus only on white countries' babies, while not even addressing the situation of overpopulation in the third world ! Double standards, dishonesty or severe intellectual myopy?

What a pathetic spectacle of white guilt combined with the superstitious belief that global warming could be stopped by complex financial finagles.

Those misconceptions are familiar to skadi readers so it is the following misconception that I can't leave unchallenged:

That is based on distortions in the press where we only hear of Africa when there is a famine, a major war, or a complete collapse. If all one knew of Africa were from ads featuring pathetic pity-mongers such as Sally Struthers, then this notion would be understandable. The combination of those pictures of distended bellies with the whining of African politicians about imperialism leaves a bad taste but tells more about the western press than about what to expect from Africa.

The populations of Africa and similar areas would not starve were foreign aid and charitable contributions withdrawn. Left to their own devices, African would rely on small-scale farming of yams and the like, some starving, enough others surviving. The aid does not prop up an unviable population but instead accomplishes two objectives: 1) governments dependent on Europe and America rather than on the consent of their own governed populations, and 2) indirect subsidies to American and European industry by giving foreigners money to buy from them.

Its interesting that at the Jewish wedding ceremony the blessing said to the Bride is that the hope is for her to be mother to ten thousand thousand descendants.

The Koreans found a solution to this problem

Daewoo Logistics of South Korea has secured farmland in Madagascar to grow food crops for Seoul, in a deal that diplomats and consultants said was the largest of its kind.

The company said it had leased 1.3m hectares of farmland – about half the size of Belgium – from Madagascar’s government for 99 years. It plans to ship the maize and palm oil harvests back to South Korea.

Shin Dong-hyun, a senior manager at Daewoo Logistics in Seoul, said the company would develop the arable land for farming over the next 15 years, using labour from South Africa, and intended to replace about half South Korea’s maize imports.

South Korea, a heavily populated but resource-poor nation, is the fourth-largest importer of maize and among the 10 largest buyers of soyabeans.

Carl Atkins, of consultants Bidwells Agribusiness, said Daewoo Logistics’ investment in Madagascar was the largest it had seen. “The project does not surprise me, as countries are looking to improve food security, but its size – it does surprise me.”

Concepción Calpe, a senior economist at the FAO in Rome, said the investment came after this year’s food crisis. “Countries are looking to buy or lease farmland to improve their food security,” she said.

Al-Qudra Holding, an investment company based in Abu Dhabi, said in August it planned to buy 400,000 hectares of arable land in countries in Africa and Asia by the end of the first quarter of 2009.

Meles Zenawi, prime minister of Ethiopia, said this year its government was “very eager” to provide hundreds of thousands of hectares of agricultural land to Middle Eastern countries for investment.

    Crazy

It is actually NOT the developed countries that are the cause of overpopulation. It is developing countries like India, and African countries that are the cause of the heaviest over population. Many developed countries are having to encourage people to have babies because people don't want to have large families in developed countries. Instead of making people in their own countries have limits on children they should be working to encourage birth control in countries where the birth rate is incredibly high. Most developed countries have a greater immigration problem than they do with population issues. Places like Ireland actually have a zero population growth according the the last census.
