    That's an interesting map. Frisians covered quite a bit of ground in those days. Frisians fought to maintain their independence from the Franks, and maintained their freedom from the late 10th century, though nominally the vassals of the counts of Holland who were unable to enforce their rule over the Frisians. The period of the "Frisian freedom", in which serfdom and feudalism were, according to Wikipedia, nonexistent, is interesting. It would seem the Frisians were quite socially and politically progressive for their time.
