Finland is the ancestral country of the Finns, not Swedes. It's no more a Germanic country than any other non-Germanic country where Germanics dwell. Sorry Petey, but you're just not right and no one here agrees with ya.

Not really a correct interpretation. Finland has clearly a special status among non-Germanic countries (allthings definition) and this can be backed with multiple claims based on historical facts. First, I wouldn't be so sure whether Finland is even the ancestral country of Finns. It's the ancestral country of the indegious fenno-ugrian Sami/Lapps as is Scandinavia. However, genetics prove that despite linguistical connection Finns are not Sami, but a different etnicity. The origins of Finns is still somewhat a mystery, all we know that there has been spoken proto-Germanic languages in the shores of Finland already during the Corded-Ware culture. Finland was also settled by the Iron age Scandinavians. However there a phenomena called "a language shift" and that's what happened to early Scandinavians of the country. This added with the current offical status of Swedish language in the country as well as the language minority of 6%, and most importantly the political, educational admistrative and religious institution based purely and only on a Germanic tradition certainly makes Finland a Germanic country, perhaps if not fully atleast peripherically.

i Think Slovenia was influenced, the Germans took my grandfather in 1942 when he was 12 and took him and 45000 other people in Germany, they putted the children in some kind of school, by 1943, he was in Hitlerjugend and in 1945. he was defending Berlin, i think that counts a bit of an influence...anyway everybody in my family speaks German, in the town too, its in the north somewhere near the austrian border, i think its mostly cause of the austro-Hungary and everything, even in Istra where my granny is from everything that was built before 1920 is in German, the graveyards, lots of churches, hospitals and everything, people here still call it ''kustenland'' like it was called back then, so Slovenia and present Croatian northern coast is influenced, as is the Capital of Croatia but i was there only once when i got back from Capetown to visit.......

    The Baltic states.

Architecture is very similair to Scandinavia and Germany. Also a lot of native Balts have German, Dutch and Scandinavian originated surnames.

Hardly, unless you're referencing the Germanic remnants in the occupied region of Königsberg.

The Varangians settled in what is now the Ukraine, and, even in this case, were never as successful as the Vikings in other regions (Normandy, British Isles, etc.). Their only legacy is the establishment of the city of Novgorod (then called Holmgard), and any Norse influence, ethnically or linguistically, was assimilated into the Slavic fold within a few centuries.

I don't believe there is any other Germanic influence in Russia than the enclaves and colonies founded by Germans on the Volga and the former German territories stolen by Russia.

    Germanic influence (old Königsberg)

Russian influence (new Königsberg aka Kaliningrad)

Konigsberg is a city with really rich history. It's connected to baltic coultures of Prussia, Lithuania, next Poland, Teutonic Order and last, and IMHO worst- Russia. Russians who migrated to Konigsberg were strange to this land and its heritage.

I can write here about one interesting matter. I suppose many of people interested in germanic influences in other countries can think about Prussian land or Pommern which is now a part of Poland. Many towns here (by accident, Im from this land) created by Teutonic Order. For example city where I live, Thorn ( http://www.torun.pl/portal/index.php?lang=de ). For long time it was in strong german influence, and now many people here are proud of Teutonic origin of town. Lately someone got idea to set up a memorial statue to Herman Von Salza. He established Thorn in 1233r. Of course not everybody wants it...well its typical for poles, whatever large part of people want. I think it is some kind of influence, a strong connection to this tradition, and of course pride of it . Defenders of this idea comes mostly from University of Nicolaus Copernicus in Thorn. Especially historians that know excatly how important Teutonic Oreder was for our land.

    Dagna:
    U meant commie influence?
I think this picture of "Russian" architecture is 100 percent crap on Russian culture from ur bad vision of question and problem. So if u dont like commie architecture, so type in "commie" instead of Russian ok?

Please use proper pronouns like "you and your" rather than "u" etc. The use of the single letter "u" to describe the second person should be restricted to the Dutch/Flemish language boards, thank you. - Sig.
