Iceland Named Best Country to Live In

Iceland is in second place on the United Nations development plan of the countries with the highest standard of living. Norway is in first place, for the fifth year in a row, and Australia in third.

The United Nations report will be published in its entirety on September 7th, reports the Icelandic Broadcasting Service, RÚV.

Last year Sweden was in second place, followed by Australia and Canada. Sierra Leone was in the last place.

It is nice to see that Norway and Iceland are holding hands when it comes to standards of life. Two free nordic nations in their own lands.

Iceland Named Best Country to Live In

We all knew Iceland is pretty great. Even the UN thinks so. Here is the full list of countries.

BRASILIA (Nov. 27) - Iceland has overtaken Norway as the world's most desirable country to live in, according to an annual U.N. table published on Tuesday that again puts AIDS-afflicted sub-Saharan African states at the bottom.

Rich free-market countries dominate the top places, with Iceland, Norway, Australia, Canada and Ireland the first five but the United States slipping to 12th place from eighth last year in the U.N. Human Development Index.

But the index, blending 2005 figures for life expectancy, educational levels and real per capita income, finds that all 22 countries falling into its "low human development" category are in sub-Saharan Africa, with Sierra Leone last.

In 10 of these countries, two children in five will not reach the age of 40, said the compilers at the U.N. Development Program. Last year's report said HIV/AIDS had had a "catastrophic effect" on life expectancy in the region.

The index ranks 175 U.N. member countries plus Hong Kong and the Palestinian territories. It does not include 17 countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia, because of inadequate data.

Norway had held top spot for six years but was edged into second place by Iceland this year because of new life expectancy estimates and updated figures for gross domestic product, or GDP, the report said.

U.N. officials played down the significance of minor short-term shifts in the rankings including the slide in the U.S. position. They said if subsequent data for the year in question been available for last year's report, the United States would have been in 10th, not eighth place.

The United States scores high on real per capita GDP, which at $41,890 is second only to that of Luxembourg ($60,228), but less well on life expectancy -- joint last in the top 26 countries, along with Denmark and South Korea, at 77.9 years.

Japanese have the longest life expectancy -- 82.3 years -- and Zambians the lowest, at 40.5.

The report said most countries had seen their human development index rise over the last 30 years, but in 16 it was lower than in 1990, and in three -- the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe -- lower than in 1975.

Per capita GDP is 45 times higher in Iceland than in Sierra Leone.

The United Nations has published its human development index every year since 1990.

Surely the presence of trees should be among the criteria for determining the quality of life. I am surprised that Germanic spirit could survive so well in the absence of oak groves.

Yes, exactly. The whole point of these, "best place to live" awards is simply to give boat people a general direction to cayack in. : Though I think before it was Finland who was in the lead. I don't know why the hell Finland, with huge suicide rates, was awarded this other than to "fix" it's low immigration profile.

This is the wolf age, if you want anything to succeed you must submerge it in failure and hardship to stand a chance. That's partly why a little volcano out cropping has done so well for us thus far. Not only that, Iceland had trees and it may have them again. I think Iceland has a terraformation project under way with it's heart set on restoring the forests.

What is highly interesting, is that many of the countries that are ranked highest on the list, are those which are not the ideal for human living considering the climate and the environment; Most are countries where in the past centuries, people have had to struggle, stick together and help each others of the same community to survive the next year. People have had to think further their own belly button and plan their lives months over tomorrow to stay alive. People must have learned to care the others for their own sake; next time it may have been you who have needed help.

And this is the very basis of the Nordic welfare - Icelanders would not have survived even a decade on their Island with let's say Mediterraean mentality, not to mention anything even more southern (Sorry you all decent and good Meds of the forum, I hope you understand what I mean). While the ideal living conditions in Europe (by environment) can be found from the Mediterraean. Still, only Spain and Italy is on top 20.

This the very same mentality, which have made people of the north survive through the hard times and rise the welfare so high it is today, will also be our people's destruction if one thing will not be realized; not all are like us. The world has become smaller and smaller due to modern media, and human suffering all over the world are being brought to our homes via media. Helping the others is in our race memory since for centuries it has been crucial for our survival. Now it's turning against us because there are too many suffering (for reasons caused mainly all by themselves - not being able to help oneself and the others) in the world and we're not too numerous, and we can't help everyone without getting destroyed ourselves, and then no one has anything.

What I have been trying to say with my insufficient English skills? The list recognizes Iceland like it should be, but is also a curse. Now many people in not-so blessed parts of the world sees that Iceland is a great place and maybe they could get a piece of luxury by trying to move in. The tragedy is that the heterogenous nations are the most viable ones, and too many immigrants will destroy the harmony. Iceland is especially vulnerable because of small population.
