If im not mistaken, you can only buy alcohol in Iceland from Á.T.V.R. governemnt registered shops and a bottle of beer costs about £50......which ranks it as the worst place in the universe to live in my books.

Not sure this is the most reliable source, but for what it's worth:

Well i was exaggerating....but if someone asked me 15 or more euros for a litre of beer they would be met with a hollow laugh.......see me turn on my heel and stalk out of their godfrosaken volcano vowing never to return.

A pint of beer in Iceland is more like 3 pounds.

The thing with government-registered shops exists in almost all Nordic countries, here in Sweden as well. Alcoholic drinks heavier than beer can only be bought at Systembolaget which is our government-owned chain of liquor stores. I guess this a product of our innate Scandinavian socialism.

TommyAtkins, please refrain from attempting to figure out beer costs whilst intoxicated.

It's actually not that bad. Since Systembolagets retail margin is so ridiculously low the better stuff is actually quite cheap; the alcohol tax is levied on alcohol content, not on the retail price you know. Think about that the next time you go shopping for some nice Vieille Réserve or 18+ year old single malt.

    Imported Beer (0.33 litre bottle) €5.43 € therefore a litre is €16.29.

So buying a round means taking out a second mortgage.

Around 7 GBP is normal to pay for 0,4 or 0,5 L beer on pubs here

A basic understanding of economics and geography may be of use. Not sure how the price of imported beer is an over-riding issue in regards to quality of life. Clearly Icelanders by nature have a lifestyle that other Germanic countries need to adopt; the fact that they can't buy Bitburger dirt cheap is irrelevant...
