I heard some good stuff about their music, some time ago.
Don't think it fits me completely, but I'm going to look into it.

I created a video, myself this evening. For another track by :Of The Wand And The Moon:. Didn't see the thanks/rep. remarks until just a minute ago, but now I'm even more happy that I created it, heheh. And if you don't care for the imagery, then at least there's a nice track to it.

Used one of my favourite tracks, some minor photo editing (MS Paint :eek and a bit of time.

I know that most have listed Heathen metal groups here which use heathenry thematically but I haven't seen any music that truly contemplates heathenry or expresses it on a artistic/spiritual level. As Maelstrom rightly said, heathenry has become "trendy" amongst the metalhead herds who simply latch onto these bands and try to imitate everything they do.

But there will always be herds, followers, and slaves, just as there will always be shepherds, leaders, and masters. Heathenry is about being the master, not the slave and I think that there are a lot of bands out there who understand what it means to be a heathen, and express it musically.

One musical group--it would be wrong to call it a "band"-- that I recently came across really exemplifies the musicians who understand the spirituality of the resurgent heathen Weltanschauung. Kvitran and Gaahl from Gorgoroth are responsible for the "musical constellation" known as Wardruna. Unlike death, black, and power metal bands which use the imagery of our faith in the same way a merchant uses clothing (to decorate and hide himself), Wardruna is an example of musicians who truly capture the spirituality in their music. The premier album, "gap var Ginnunga" will have 9 songs on it, 8 of which will be musical contemplations of a single rune (not according to the three ættirs).

    If you're interested:
    www.wardruna.com

I don't want to give the impression that I look down on metal music, I regard myself as a Hessian and I don't think Wadruna is alone in understanding what the spirituality really means. I think that there are a few bands who use heathen/Nordic imagery to really positive ends.

Ensiferum, already mentioned, is a great example of this as is
Burzum, especially (I think at least) the Filosofem album, as well as
Asmegin, a recent development from Norway who employ Folk music in their songs, and
Bathory, despite being one of the bands responsible for the emergence of the oft times superficial "Viking Metal" genre, really captures something spiritual on his Nordland albums

I think though, if one wants to speak of "Heathen music", one cannot speak of "heathen" metal; the music which captures spirituality is found in folk music, which contains inherent to it an organic sense of heathen spirituality, rather than simply wearing heathen imagery as a garment on stage.

Try Falkenbach! They have some 'screamed' vocals but they're well balanced with heroic chants. Also try Empyrium (the later albums like Weiland). Both sing in German (Falkenbach partially in English if memory serves me correctly).

Just remembered Tyr too. From the Faroe Islands, all lyrics are concerned with Heathenry and mythology. Sun in English but highly accomplished and no screaming.

Most "Viking Metal" bands seem to be Viking fetishists who like to play dress up and skip around trees.

For my Sigurblót I usually use Lord Wind "Hail to the Gods of Victory" from the Heralds of Fight album, and for most of my rune rites I use "Secret Key to Hidden Wisdom" from the Atlantean Monument album. I find that these sorts of folky-sounding songs seem most fit for the ritual, but I have to say I never thought of using classical music like Stravinski.

Gee, where have all the Heathens sprung from lately? LOL

    Perhaps I've just noticed!

Good list. I would like to start listening to this stuff in English, although it would be good to relearn my German.

Any instrumentals would also be great, anything that would give off that Heathen feel pertinent to conducting rites.

    Muttley: "Hehehehehehehehehe"

"And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure." - Albus Dumbledore, from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

    Forseti - Abendrot
Death in June - Runes and Men (live)

    Skald
    Harald Foss - I Vesterveg

    Glittertind - en stille morgen

Was gonna mention Burzum, but it has already been said. Norwegian "Isengard" (One of Fenriz's sideprojects), German "Heimdalls Wacht" (or their other project The Martyrium) or "Horn" might fall in taste if you like metal. They are not so fond of myspace I think, so couldnt provide samples. I can highly recommend them though.
Jotunspor is a project from King and Kvitrafn known from Gorgoroth, its black metal with nordic heritage and ancestors
