So would I, I think. Yet, such a life doesn't really speak to the imagination as much as life in Plato's Athens or feudal Japan. Such nations still preserved a lot of their inner harmony, but they moved way beyond the simple life of the hunter-gatherer.

I definitely have strong sympathies for Leof's POV. As far as science, great philosophers, and empires go I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't miss that much of the science, great philosophers have walked in all cultures at all times (but might not have been recorded/or were called something else), and my only interest in empires is avoiding them. If someone offered my the opportunity to chuck all this modern existence and go back in time to a "simpler" age, I'd be pretty tempted to do it.

You're comparing oranges with apples. I'd go to the stone age anytime if I have to choose between living back then and living today. However, I would have a hard time choosing between good old pre-technological days and the days of Plato or the Teutonic knights.

There is nothing about modern civilisation worth honoring, but there is a lot worth honoring about some of the empires from our past.

I am? I didn't really make any direct comparisons. The comparisons you are inferring might not be along the lines I am thinking. I am thinking more along the lines of:

    Leof stated:
"I am happiest edging out an existence hunting and farming for survival, having sumbels with my kith and kin and the occasional fued with my neighbors.

That statement could logically refer to the Stone Age, 12th cen. Iceland, or 21st cen. rural America. Regardless of which era you choose, I might not care about technological marvels, I would always have philosophy, and Empires are still not something I am drawn to (Roman, Germanic, American or otherwise).

Mid 11th century England; just in time for the Norman conquest. You know they didn't like Saxons.

Early 17th century Ireland: Plenty of religious turmoil followed by the Cromwellian conquest.

Germany between 1914 and 1945: Someone your age would haven been in the trenches of the Western Front in WWI or on the Eastern Front in WWII.

You seem to like the more dangerous times & places of history.:033102st:

Almost any European hunter-gatherer/farming society would be fine. Also Nazi Germany and the Old South.

Come to think of it, we all have our own romantic ideas of the past. Most often it's only the glory that is passed on, and the less glorious parts that are cut out for eternity.

For one it would all depend into which class we were born anyway: It wouldn't be funny to live as a concentration camp internal in the Third Reich, nor as a slave in ancient Rome.

And for another ... as much as I like the idea of gaining fame as a court knight I'd be less fond of freezing my testicles off at night, sweating in full plate on a battlefield to the level of borderline dehydration with the constant stench of corpses around, nor the fact that whilst on a journey I'd have to defecate into my armour. In fact that last point makes the battlefield experience back then even less worthwhile (at least WWI trenches had latrines...).

And finally - how many of us really realise how dependent we are on making the modern era as good as we can? People romanticise and idolize the Amish at times for their traditional style without any style of technology - but then again, bear in mind they have been brought up this way. In fact, I yet have to find a converted traditionalist who shuns the internet, washing machines, modern-technique-saucepans or public transport.
