Question Where Are the Best Places to Live in England and Scotland?

There is a relative chance I may be moving there for work at some point.

I've been given the information and just need to suggest places I would like to be located, then aquire a VISA etc.

    Any suggestions would be good.

I live in grim Aberdeen, but Edinburgh is a lovely city. If you want to know where to live in Edinburgh I could help you out.

Parts of England are really beautiful. The Lake District is unspoilt by mass immigration. Kendal, Ambleside - very smart locations, but sleepy to the point of falling over.

    London is vile - avoid.

Other than that the South-West can be idyllic, but I would wait for suggestions from other posters because it has been many years since I lived in England.

I will make one suggestion for you - Winchester, Hampshire. Seriously English and very pretty. It was once the ancient capital of England. Another place in Hampshire, Fleet, has the best standard of living in the UK. Lots of wealth and healthy married couples can be found in Fleet, although it is just a small town of 30,000 and looks unremarkable.

If I were to relocate to England, I would choose Winchester or Fleet.

Have you considered the Republic of Ireland?

    Best wishes,

    Fortis.

Thanks a lot for those suggestions, I'll definately look into them.

The work I'm going for is in the IT business, I'm not particularly rich so somewhere affordable is a key along with being a nice area.

I was considering Cheshire for some reason, probably because part of my family comes there.

I would never consider working in Ireland, I'm not really a fan to be honest. Plus the accents annoy me.

    How about choosing this way:

What is your surname? (PM me, I am interested to know.)

    Put it into here:

    http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/Surnames.aspx

and see where it is the most prevalent.

Then, have a look at census 2001 (the latest comprehensive census) :

    http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2001/get_facts.asp

    See what fits best?

Move to an area where your y-chromosome feels at home, and then choose the better area within that area.

The most expensive areas are, predictably, Greater London and the South West. To be honest, I'd advise avoiding the South all together. Not only is it generally very expensive, it's becoming overcrowded. If you're after beautiful landscapes, Wales, North England and Scotland are best. If you want city life, I'd suggest Manchester perhaps, or Norwich, Edinburgh or Inverness. These are some of the nicer cities I've visited.

Avoid the South-East like the plague.

Join the Wild West revolution and dwell in the West country.

Having lived in manchester I'd say avoid, the area I was in was a multi-cultural hellhole. And the City itself is one of the worst for crime. Sure it's ok for a visit but I wouldn't live there (again!). Cheshire is a better if you have to live anywhere near Manchsester or even the Peak District.
