Total smoking ban for Schiphol in 2008

Total smoking ban for Schiphol in 2008

The squeeze on smokers gets a little tighter on January 1 when Amsterdam's Schiphol airport brings in a total smoking ban.

No cigarettes, pipes or cigars will be allowed to be smoked anywhere, including cafes and restaurants, once passengers are through passport control
    Source: Dutchnews.nl

This will effectively make Schiphol the first total smoke-free mainport in the EU.
I actually agree with this policy.

    It's about freaking time.
In a woman's love is injustice and blindness towards all that she does not love... Woman is not yet capable of friendship: women are still cats and birds. Or, at best, cows. Woman is not yet capable of friendship. But tell me, you men, which of you is yet capable of friendship? --- Nietzsche, TSZ

A good step in the right direction. Every indoor public place in the world should be smoke-free.

In any case, I think that it is ridiculous to ban smoking in all public places. Those who run the place should have the choice whether they allow smoking or not within the vicinity. If that's Schiphol Airport deciding that they won't have smokers in, then that's their choice, and I'm fine with it (even though it is fairly annoying) since it's not an attempt by the government to clamp down on people's freedom. I still think though that it is unnecessary - surely an airport of the size of Schiphol could install a few smoking areas ... if they're in an enclosed room, maybe up the stairs from the main terminal, then the amount of smoking evading the area is so minimal that it wouldn't disturb anyone, really.
