    Swiss Elect First Negro Lawmaker

: Is it the idiot vote or White guilt? Or maybe the immigrant vote.

"I am the black sheep elected after being chased," declared the first Black politician to be elected in to the Swiss parliament in the first interviews following the elections.

Ricardo Lumengo, who arrived in Switzerland 25 years ago from Angola, was savouring a victory that surpirsed him more than anyone else.

It was a victory made all the sweeter in the context of an election campaign fought on the anti-immigration, anti-crime views held by the right.

The highly controversial poster from the Swiss People's Party showing a black sheep being kicked out of Switzerland by three white sheep gained them headlines at home, loathing in the foreign press and a substancial increase in votes and seats at home.

The backlash though, from the message of zero tolerance for foreigners who commit crimes on Swiss soil, apparently played on the sympathies of those voters outraged by the tone.

"I am red and black. I like it," the Socialist Party member told the German language paper Blick, referring to his party's colours as well as his skin.

The 45-year-old lawyer fled Angola to Switzerland in 1982 and started by washing dishes in a restaurant in Fribourg to fund his legal education before eventually moving into politics.

His rise from nowhere is not unlike that of his inevitable rival, Christoph Blocher - the man identified as the strongman of the People's Party.

The 67-year-old billionaire businessman made his fortune in the chemical industry after his humble start as a farm hand. The son of a priest, he too trained as a lawyer.

While Blocher's party is percieved as racist in how it wishes to deal with criminals the majority of whom, according to statistics, are foreign, Lumengo is the archetypical immigrant the right claim it wishes to produce.

Lumengo rejects the idea of Blocher or his party as his nemesis.

"I am a symbol for Swiss people from abroad but I am not trying to be anti-Blocher," he told the French language paper Le Matin.

When asked by the reporter if he was afraid of encountering the majority People's Party in parliament, he siad, "Why? Now I can speak to these people directly."

Lumengo has received quantities of hate mail during his career. He may have proclaimed "I am the UDC black sheep," after his election victory, referring to the People's Party by its French acronym, but he insists that he has succeeded in politics in spite of, rather than because of his skin colour.

The article doesn't mention that overall his socialist party got hammered in the elections, losing voters to the conservative/nationalist SVP as well as a couple variants of the Green party.

Is this a subtle way of confessing that he or a family member of his is a criminal?:p
A* I’m a dreadful reactionary, Mrs. Helena. I don’t like this progress one bit.
    H* Like Nana.
A* Yes, like Nana. Does Nana have a prayer book?
    H* A big fat one.
A* And are there prayers in it for various occurrences in life? Against storms? Against illness?
H* Against temptation, against floods -
A* But not against progress, I suppose?
    H* > I think not.
    A* That’s a shame.

    Well...
Congrats to him then, since he got elected by the Swiss voters and I don't want to mistrust their judgement.
Since he has been elected, he appearantly is a Swiss citizen and enjoys the rights and duties of one too. It shows that this "negro" ( as some of you call him) has been sucessfull in integration and since that Switzerland does not exactly have the most simple procedures I take it that this must be an intelligent man, and a good citizen.

So the majority is always right?
"Nothing is more disgusting than the majority: because it consists of a few powerful predecessors, of rogues who adapt themselves, of weak who assimilate themselves, and the masses who imitate without knowing at all what they want." (Johann Wolfgang Goethe)

No. But I know one thing: the Swiss voters have shown throughout history to be wiser in their judgement then my own countries' electorate. So I trust the Swiss. Not everything left-wing is bad, Jäger.

It seems to me that people are ignoring that he only is proud of having that job for selfish and "racial" reasons, not because he wants to help improve "his" country.

    eyes:

Oh please, that is so typical.

In Greece it's the same. The so-called extreme right-wing party included minority groups as their candidates just to shake off the racist, 'neo-nazi' image that had been created by the media.

We are not racist, we are only patriots, look, we even have 'greek-minded' Romas and other non-whites among us.

In the end, everyone wins. They got elected and the minorities also got their place in the sun.
What hypocricy. If I would have wanted minority groups in the parliament, I'd vote for some hippyish lefty party anyways. (I didn't vote at all).
