    Knut Hamsun

"Our planet will be a nuclear desert when the American Empire based on it's religion of economic growth and hypocrisy ultimately collapses."
Knut Hamsun, the Great Norwegian philosopher and Nobel prize winner.

In 1945 at the age of 86, the Nobel laureate novelist Knut Hamsun wrote an obituary of
Adolf Hitler in the newspaper Aftenposten. Hamsun's eulogy to Hitler served as the collaborationist newspaper's feature article on Hitler's death.

    Adolf Hitler

I'm not worthy to speak up for Adolf Hitler, and to any sentimental rousing his life and deeds do not invite.

Hitler was a warrior, a warrior for humankind and a preacher of the gospel of justice for all nations. He was a reforming character of the highest order, and his historical fate was that he functioned in a time of exampleless [unequalled] brutality, which in the end felled him.

Thus may the ordinary Western European look at Adolf Hitler. And we, his close followers, bow our heads at his death.

    Knut Hamsun.

In younger years, Hamsun had anarchist leanings of an anti-egalitarian, racially conscious bent. In The Cultural Life of America (1889), he expressed his fear of miscegenation: "The Negros are and will remain Negros, a nascent human form from the tropics, rudimentary organs on the body of white society. Instead of founding an intellectual elite, America has established a mulatto studfarm."[23]

Following the Second Boer War, he adopted increasingly conservative views. He also came to be known as a prominent advocate of Germany and German culture, as well as a rhetorical opponent of British imperialism and the Soviet Union. During both the First and the Second World War, he publicly expressed his sympathy for Germany. His sympathies were heavily influenced by the impact of the Boer War, seen by Hamsun as British oppression of a small people, as well as by his dislike of the English and distaste for the USA.

Gold ring with runes found in Norway.
Runologist Jonas Nordby says it's likely we are dealing with a male name ending in "-mr" (Grímr, for example) followed by á mi[k]. So put together it says "(male name) owns me".
Dating based on the runes themselves is uncertain, but Jonas says the runes are younger and that the r rune is used in the nominative ending (instead of the yr rune), which indicates that
the ring is probably not older than the beginning of the 1000s, but it might as well originate in the 1300s.

Arnt Harald Stange is the metal detectorist pictured who found the ring. Quite the find.

In England one sometimes encounters these "wavy" brick fences. And curious as it may seem, this shape uses LESS bricks than a straight fence.

That's because a straight fence that is just one brick thick is not sturdy enough to stand alone and can be easily toppled with a determined push. For that reason straight fences always have a thickness of at least two layers of bricks and often more, and are also reinforced at regular intervals with vertical posts serving as buttresses.

But a wavy "one-brick" fence stands just fine on its own due to the arch support provided by its shape, which combines both fence and buttress.

The beautifully ornamented axe from Mammen. Found in burial mound tree-ring dated 970-971AD. It's been presented a hundred times focusing on decoration. Let's nerd it out on misconceptions about its shape instead. Photo: Roberto Fortuna & Kira Ursem, National Museum, Denmark.

This drawing is from a thorough publication about the Mammen axe and presents the misconseption of shape very clearly. This reconstruction of pointed lugs is ill-founded. Drawing: Orla Svensen, in publication by Ulf Näsman 1991.

The lugs of the axe from Mammen originally ended in quite wide, flat ends, not points.

Typologically the Mammen axe could possibly be defined as Jan Petersen type L, but it has a quite thin blade reminiscent of the broad axes (Jan Petersen type M) becoming populare towards the end of the 10th century. The edge is too short though to classify it as a broad axe.

A final note: The broad golden line decorating the transition between blade and haft hole area on the Mammen axe. When analysed it turned out to consist of copper and zink, thus it's brass and not gold.
