Academy-building in Leiden (province of Zuid Holland, the Netherlands)

The University of Leiden is the oldest university in the Northern Netherlands (now the Netherlands), founded with permission of the King of Spain (!) and the Dutch rebel leader William of Orange during the Eighty Years War in 1575 to commemorate the bravery of the citizens of the city during the Spanish siege of 1574.

It has always had a tremendous reputation in our country (comparable in some circles to Oxford or Cambridge). Now it is one of the larger and more traditional (and elitist) universities and known for the brutal treatment the "newbs" go through by the hands of student groups, the elitism and it's excellent education.

Picture found on youtube, Academy-building seen from the Rapenburg (a canal in the center of Leiden)

Thumbs Down Påskkärringar: the Easter Eve 'witches' in Sweden

Read about the Påskkärringar here :thumb001:

Children dressed as witches give a clear indication that Swedish Påsk origins predate Christianity. Folklore alleges that witches flew off on broomsticks to dance with the devil at Blåkulla.
In Sweden, this tale ties in with Easter. And so on skärtorsdag, Maundy Thursday, modern Swedish children dress up as påskkärringar (Easter hags) paint their faces, carry a broom and knock on neighbor’s doors for treats, much like American children do at Halloween.
    ...and here
On Maunday Thursday (today) or Easter Eve Swedish girls and boys dress up as hags and pay visits to their neighbors. Some leave a small decorated card, an "Easter letter", hoping for a sweet or coin in return. The custom of making "Easter letters" is especially widespread in western Sweden, where it is also the custom to slip the letter into a persons mailbox or under his door without being seen. The identity of the sender is a secret.
...the neighbors' kids showed up at our doorstep today!! 0003:

    Vadstena

Vadstena Abbey is one of Sweden's greatest Gothic monuments -- in the architectural sense, not that of the people who may or may not have inhabited the same region of Sweden before moving on to sack Rome. St. Birgitta, or St. Bridget, depending on who you ask or where you look her up, was its founder.

Her possibly ergot-induced visions inspired and rejuvenated late medieval Germanic art. Much of the specific imagery in Germanic altarpieces come from her writings rather than from the Gospels.

Vadstena is very close to Rok, the site of the longest Runic inscription.

Burg Eltz if I remember correctly, is a castle that was never ruined, but has been lived in continuously by its original lords. It was a bit of a walk from the Mosel river. I was suprised to see peasants in traditional-looking peasant costumes. It was as if I had entered a time machine.
