The East Indiaman "Amsterdam", berthed at the Dutch Maritime Museum ( Nationaal Scheepvaartmuseum) in Amsterdam is a replica of the original East Indiaman of the same name that was lost on the coast near Hastings, England in 1748 (on it's very first voyage and during a hurricane)

With these type of ships did the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) sail to East Asia (and in particular present day Indonesia) to buy spices, tea, coffee and other exotic luxuries. Because ot their quality and the navigation skills of their sailors and captains did the V.O.C only loose 4 percent of it's ships during the years of it's existence: from 1602 to 1794 did no less then 1461 East Indiamen make around 4000 round trips ( 9 months journey to Indonesia and back), only 192 ships.were shipwrecked during that long period. Making it problably the most durable company at that time. Knowing the maritime skills of my people, I can assume that most of these ships went lost during wars and too piracy (that is why most round trips were made in armada's under the protection of Dutch navy and VOC warships: the socalled "retourvloten-singular: retourvloot.)

In 1985, almost 200 years after the demise of the VOC, volunteers started working on the reconstruction of the "Amsterdam", using the old models and blueprints to get the job done and making only slight alterations: for instance the height of the walkways underneath the decks was slightly increased (average height in 1748 was just 1.65, by my knowledge, and is 1.85 now), stairs replaced ladders, the spars were glued and tropical wood was used rather then oak.
The ship was finally finished in 1991 and has been the showcase of the Maritime Museum and the City of Amsterdam ever since: it also proudly joined the parade in Sail 1995, Sail 2000, and Sail 2005. (a maritime festival that is returning to the City of Amsterdam on a 5 years cyclus).

    The 'Amsterdam': statistics

    Keel length:
    42,5 m

    Length from stem to stem:
    48,0 m

    Beam:
    11,5 m

    Draught:
    5,5 m

Height from keel to mast top:
    56,0 m

    Displacement:
    1100 tons

    Guns (original):
    42

    Guns (replica):
    16

    Volcano and Aurora in Iceland
    Credit: Sigurdur H. Stefnisson

Explanation: Sometimes both heaven and Earth erupt. In Iceland in 1991, the volcano Hekla erupted at the same time that auroras were visible overhead. Hekla, one of the most famous volcanoes in the world, has erupted at least 20 times over the past millennium, sometimes causing great destruction. The last eruption occurred only six years ago but caused only minor damage. The green auroral band occurred fortuitously about 100 kilometers above the erupting lava. Is Earth the Solar System's only planet with both auroras and volcanos?
