I don't know of any one tribe that was consistently dominant, but I think the most powerful confederation of tribes was the Alamanni.

The Franks won most of the battles with the Alamanni, except for when they were kicked out of northern Italy.

Before the Frank confederation, the Goths were more powerful.

In more modern times, the Anglo-Saxon/Normans were more powerful.

Hmm, perhaps. I actually should have thought about Germanic instead of German. Lots more choices in that case.

I would probably say that the Franks and the Vikings (and later the Normans) were some of the more powerful Germanic groups.

Anglosaxon. For better or for worse a Germanic language, English, is one of the dominant languages in the world for a reason- the aggressiveness, ferocity, and organization of the Anglosaxon.

To imagine, some settlers from Angeln who migrated to Roman Britain being the forefathers of two world empires.

Honorable mention would be the Franks, who were the forefathers of modern Germany. Karl der Grosse was an impressive figure whose legacy isn't really truly appreciated; he was the first Germanic "Roman Emperor."
However, his family was also related, via marriage to the family of Alfred the Great, who lived about a century later. Alfred is the first "King of the Anglosaxons" and the only English monarch called "the Great."

In retrospect the Anglosaxons had an aversion to the Romans/Roman civilization for a long time and are/were more representative of the innate Germanic nature. The Franks were Romanized very through and through. As an example, the Anglosaxons still remained heathens well into the 7th/8th century C.E., by which time the Franks had long been Catholicized.
