    American Ethnic Groups

Between the two, who are considered lower socially on the American ethnic totem pole, the Italian-Americans or the Polish-Americans?

The Italian-Americans, they don't fit in and their communities are closed. They often hide illegal immigrants who come from Italy to make money in my country! :

I used to live in a city with one of the highest Ukrainian immigrant populations in the US and generally, they came off as secretive, unfriendly, rude, and rather cheap (I think this can be said about many people who came from poor countries though). Every Italian I've met, immigrant or not, seems to be able to fit into US "culture" much easier

Well, that depends on what you mean by "social prestige".

Italians have got this glamorized hollywood mafia reputation here, so in that regard they are. Italians are also seen as westernized, Slavs aren't (for the most part), which also has a lot to do with it. I think the more westernized you are the more you're going to be accepted in the US

Italians are lower. They have a reputation for crime. And they are darker & look more different from the Anglo-American population (most Italian-Americans being of Sicilian or south Italian descent). Poles (in America) tend to be more Nordish racially & they don't have a reputation for crimial activity. Second & third generation Polish-Americans assimilate fairly well into the White American mainstream compared to Italians. But they do form ethnic blocks in cities around the Great Lakes & in the past have supported policies that were detrimental to Anglo-Americans - like immigration policies.

As for Ukrainians & Russians, most are recent arrivals to the US & have an "alien" look about them. Russians also have a reputation for criminal activity. I think it would be for the best if we didn't allow them to immigrate to the US.

Are the Italians in the US different to the European ones? In Europe they are hardly regarded as an underclass (I will not speak of emigrants); indeed, Italy is one of Europe's cultural centres, and Italians some of Europe's most refined individuals. Like much of Southern Europe though it suffers from laziness. :p

More generally, let's be explicit by what we mean by "Western". Do we mean Anglo-saxon culture? Or do we mean Anglo-American as well as Continental European?
