Thank you for posting this! I love to have braided hair, but mostly because I'm a busy mother and a braid is the easiest way to keep my hair out of the way. I love the different braids, a very nice way to make a practical hair-do a little extra-special. I'm also glad to hear that the double braid/pig-tail can be seen as acceptable still!
I will have a lifelong aversion to hair braiding.
See, my mother has always used me as a kind of prop for her self-esteem. When I was little she'd primp me up with elaborate plaits and ribbons and forbid me to play on the bouncy castle at other kids' birthday parties and stuff like that lest I dishevel the hairstyle she'd spent the better part of an hour on or get a tear in the stupid dresses and frilly socks that she'd 'paid a lot of money for'. Having to act as a grown woman's flesh-and-blood dolly when all you want to do is run through the mud like the boys do does not quite qualify as child abuse, but it's nevertheless something that's made an impression on me, and makes overt manifestations of femininity -- always very unnatural to me -- enormously unappealing. I always made sure to sabotage her efforts with little acts of defiance like ruffling my hair before school photos and making faces as everyone else shouted, "Cheese!" Ruining a photo ranks among the worst things you can do to this type of mother -- double your points if it's a photo that other people will have copies of.
My sister was never subjected to any of it, but as my mum would remind me, I was 'the pretty one' so I had an obligation to garner for her compliments about her lovely spawn. That my personality was completely contrary to what she was trying to force me into seemed to escape her notice. Her whole ego was invested in me and I knew it, and I made use of it whenever I could.
The way I am now absolutely kills her.

I like hair braidings .... those gives some variations. I have had long hair as long as I remember. My mom has long hair too, and she is quite good on those.
If going to trainings, jogging, skiing, cycling, hiking etc. .... then I simply use ponytail (burly bands) and if needed (weather) .... some kind of ponytail headband or ponytail hat.
I like how hair braiding looks but to be honest my arms hurt after doing it myself. As I said I'm a little sloppy.
I have long hair, I cut it shouder length when I had my baby (baby = lots of mess) but now it's grown again to half back or so. I'm thinking some hairstyles where the hair is tied up, with cooking, kid, garden, husband it can get messy. Any ideas for such hairstyles (braid or not)?
Some braids which look good IMO are those long "bohemian" braids.

If I'm wanting anything bit more complicated ... I will let my mom do it. I trust on her much more. LOL.
But one can do quite a lot just alone .... if trained enough.
I have short to medium hair (a bob) so I can't do many braids. But I like pigtal braids. I don't always have time to do my hair but they're also a good style for bad hairdays
