I cannot find all the references that I used for my hair but here is one of them for Itailian hair taping.

When I was little my mom braided my hair like the girl on the left.

Also buns can be both easy and authentic. See Carl Larsson;s Kerin Reading.

Here is a gallery with a variety of braids and instructions.

I find braids on women to be quite nice and quite pretty....

My hair is long enough for a braid--but I never braid it myself. Probably not very masculine.

A couple of times a gal has braided my hair though--just for kicks.

Any one of you got a picture of yourself with a braid? Would be interesting to see, might be something for my future hair.

The styles are similar and often confused. The main difference lays in how one braids the strands. With a French braid, you weave the outer sections over the top of the centre section, but with a Dutch braid, you twist them underneath the centre strands. The result is that the Dutch braid stands out more than the softer appearance of the traditional French braid. A Dutch version basically works as an inside-out or reverse French braid.

The left one is French, the right one is Dutch

Layered hair can also be braided, though there are a few tricks one can keep in mind for better results. Not all braids work with layered hair, e.g. fishtail braids might be trickier to do if you have lots of layers in your hair, especially if the hair is also shortish. The braid will need to sit above the shortest layer in your hair. Higher braids or partial braids work best.

If you have fine or straight hair (like I do), layers will tend to stick out so it's recommended to use some hairspray to fix them. Bobby pins will also do the trick, as they can also be hidden under the hair/braid. There are also nice decorative mini pins in the form of flowers or crystals for special occasions (which can cover the ends). Or you could use mousse or hair gel to hold it in place. After you're done braiding, there will usually be a short layer left out. Gather the loose pieces and twist them around the sides of your head. Pin them behind the braid with bobby pins to keep in place. Curling the ends will make the layers blend more easily into your braids instead of poking out.

Yes, whoever said braiding is for women only... There is a site with pictures of braids on men.

A common hairstyle for Germanic males was the Suebian knot.

Germanic women also used to sometimes braid their hair too and used hair pins or flowers as decorative means.

And let's not forget the other kind of hair braiding. Hair work was quite popular during the victorian era and has always seemed more interesting than hair in a locket.
