Lillian Nordica: The First Fifty Years

Mme Lillian Nordica, The Yankee Diva, 1857-1914, made very few recordings. She recorded for Columbia and apparently was not pleased with the sound of her recordings. This is understandable. In 19O6-1911, Columbia's sound was harsh and their surfaces were abominable.

On May 15, 1982, 9 out of 14 of her surviving recordings in private collections were used in a radio broadcast. From the tape of this broadcast, a CD has been made which is sold at the Lillian Nordica Homestead in Farmington, Maine, where she was born and lived whenever she was not touring.

The songs and arias preserved in this CD are as follows: Charles Cadman: "From the Land of Sky-Blue Waters"; Giuseppe Verdi: "Tacea la Notte Placida"; Erkel...":Nagy eg Mitakar" (from "Hunyadi Laszlo"); Claude Debussy: "Les Donneurs de Serenades...";Ambroise Thomas: "Io son Titania"; Amilcare Ponchielli: "Suicidio ! In Questi Fieri Momenti" [ hair-raising !]; Richard Wagner: "Mild und leise....."Liebestod" (aus "Tristan und Isolde"); and, finally, Max Strange: "As I Roamed the Woods at Leisure".

From all ear-witness accounts, they give a very inadequate impression of a spectacular voice.
