    Why Are You a Heathen?

I was wondering when and why any and all of you chose to dedicate yourselves to our ancient folkways. For me it happened when I was a young teenager. I began to study genealogy and theology around the same time and I just felt that Christianity was not a religion for our people but a religion for Semitic peoples. When I was lucky enough to trace my fathers paternal line as well as my mothers paternal line back to before Christianity came to our family my mind had been made up for me. I wished to follow the God(s) of my fathers and ever since then I have been practicing Asatru.

I chose the traditions of my ancestors because IMO they are the best suited for me.

I became a Heathen because I want my children to enjoy the only healthy view of nature and man, and to believe in the importance of our relationship to our ancestory and the Gods of the North.

I believe that Heathenism is the answer to the problems of society.

I was raised Christian and rejected it as a young adult when I was finally forced to conclude that the entire Bible is a romantic farce celebrating a sinister form of slave-worship.

Like many "slaves", I did not want my children born into slavery.

Heathenry is far less complicated, more of a social lifestyle that I fit quite easily into, and it fits easily with me as well.

I don't have to pretend to be anything that I'm not. I can practise my faith anywhere I choose, but especially in my own home.

I've always had a passion for genealogy and family history, so honouring my ancestry is really an extension of what I've always believed in.

I'm a polytheist, so honouring the deities is easy for me. Exploring the myths and legends of my forefathers has always been a passion as well.

Christianity doesn't make any sense to me. Judaism and Islam are too alien (in spirit). Buddhism is too pacifist and passive. Shamanism can't do without psychedelics.

So I decided to look into the ancient so-called polytheistic religions, which are in fact pantheistic religions with symbolic hero worship. Not only did this appeal to me from a rational point of view, it also spoke to me from the heart. My instinct/intuition is totally aligned with those views which also happen to be the views of my ancestors. That's why I'm a heathen.

    Quite easy.

I was looking for an answer and Odinism found me and gave me answers to questions and more important more questions.

I could not personally 'worship gods'. I wanted to have a knowledge of the perception of the ancient northern europeans.

I have always been pagan in that my sense of spirituality has been oriented towards nature. I did not have a need to attribute names to those forces or gods out there. To the extent that I have appreciate churches it was really the medieval stonework and the heritage they represented.

Some years ago, my innate paganism was shaped in a heathen or even Asatru form under the influence of an Odinist ex-convict in my crew. The pragmatic spirit of the Havamal worked for me. A pilgrimage to Gamla Uppsala strengthened my confidence in the Vanir and the Aesir.

    Hi,

I seem to see the myths and things on an "as if" basis. My wife say's I'm not right and I'm not wrong either. "as if" it were Important.! And for whatever reason our stories have always touched me. I like Rydberg's take on the matter. He makes sense to me.

Many of the stories I have lived out in my life and they have touched me. I think that may be their reason. Some talk of Wyrd in our world but what just if everything didn't happen for a reason but seemed afterwards as if it did because an outcome came of it..? ( And what if Will to Power was in keeping it so ) And what of this Ragnarök..could it be a play of infantile fantasies against a cannibalistic mother, after all it is the bowels of Hel that swallow us up or is Hel really not such a nasty matter where we all go before even Valhalla..?

Oh and I'm Heathen because one must be kidding me. These religions of today do in no way suit me. They are full of not so good ideas of morality. The most nasty of all is their idea of no solidarity withing a group as if welcome to all. I find rights lacking. Earn your keep. lest someone else pick up your slack,..? How ever will we rekindle our great spirit..? Can these stories of old work for us..? They do for me..? Need we new ones fashioned after popular culture or what..? Is it not nasty..?/ Are cycles of nature not appreciated any more..? What of this fall right now..?/ Ain't the tree perty..? Dying now will they not be reborn like Yggrdrasil after the Fimbulwinter..? Is there any any hope there yet that the next generation of even our own will be the same..??

I like how heathenry emphasizes social values, the NNV, the Six-Fold Path, the Nine Charges, etc. While theology is left up to the individual. Diversity of belief is allowed as long as one respects tradition and observes the Holy Tides.
