    The Noble Nine

Here's a poem on the Noble Nine Virtues I wrote some time back.

    The Noble Nine.

    (Originally published in ORB #201)

    Courage is my strength
    To withstand wretched foes
    To sail against the storm
    And the will to insist

    Honour is my will
    To defend my dear folk
    My moral in battle
And the drive to do Good

    Truth is my oath
To keep what I pledge friends
    My word to my kin
And my address to a foe

    Fidelity is the love
That I give to my kin
    My faith to a pledge
    And the bearing of debt

    Hospitality is my house
    That a traveller shall share
    Warm meal on a hearth
And my last horn of mead

    Discipline is my strength
    To adhere to routine
    My daily devotion
    And the restraining of wrath

    Self-Reliance is my strength
    To decide my own path
My hand that feeds the mouth
    And my survival in wild

    Industriousness is my stride
    To produce what I can
    The fruits of hard work
And the bread on my plate

    Perseverance is my will
    To pursue a hard task
    My endurance of pain
    And my devotion to work

Hmmm...I came up with the idea to turn this into a discussion about the NNV...one by one. Let's start out with Courage this week.

What do you think is courage? How does one show it? Where does one show it? Can everyone be courageous? Etc.

Courage for me is been able to stand up and be counted and be different than all the people around you.To be able to stand up for what you beleive no matter what anyone has to say.Its not about fighting or anything like that because fear can make you fight. Not everyone has courage i mean how many mindless idiots to you se everyday who would do nothing to stand out in even the smallest way.

    Courage

I agree, Nordicdusk. I see moral courage as being true to oneself whatever the cost, not compromising one's principles out fear or out of greed. It is said that "Every man has his price." He who disdains and rejects the price has moral courage.

Physical courage ought not to be despised either, however. It is the strength to stand up to physical attack by overcoming fear and enduring whatever one must. Of course, cowards can have physical courage, though it is very difficult for them.

The man who does not know or has never known fear isn't courageous; he's crazy. The berserker madness is not courage. He does not have the fight-or-flee option. He is wired to fight and only to fight. If one does not have the option to flee or cower, and overcome it by the force of his will, he is not courageous.

Everyone can be courageous, no matter how big or small they may be. Courage can take many forms. It's all about standing up for yourself and your beliefs, and not letting people or circumstances or get in your way or deter you from making the choices that you need to make.

Courage is a steadfast will, and the ability to realize that sometimes you have to change it.

My take on courage (expanded from what I have stated in the poem above.)

It takes a lot of courage to stand up to those who seek to do you harm, be it a matter of physicalities, mentalities, verbalities or reputation, it takes a lot of courage to confront those who are illdisposed towards you.

It takes courage to speak out, to stand strong in the face of adversity - often things are not as they should be for the wellbeing of not only yourself but also Faith, Folk and Family, and it takes a great deal of courage to pursue a hard road, even when many people may oppose it.

It takes a lot of courage to defend your point, for example not to take a lie for granted or not accept evil as deatl, but to actively oppose that which you find harmful.

It also takes courage to make important decisions, it takes courage to make sacrifices.

Courage is the will to stand strong when one may easily falter. Indeed, it takes a lot of courage to oppose an entire army on your own in battle; but it is noble to do so.

Two weeks without a reply on behalf of the participants in the discussion, I will move on to Truth. Of course one may still comment on courage in the future, but the discussion per se will be focussed on Truth, so if you wish to say something about Courage and haven't yet, how about letting us know your opinion on both?

Anyway, here's my take on truth (expanded from the stanza in the poem):

    Pretty straightforward one, Truth, really.

This one of the NNV, IMO, links up quite well with the Second Charge: "To make no wrongsome oath: For great and grim is the reward for a plighted troth."

Like in the old saying, "A man, a word." Say your word, mean your word. Be true, to yourself, to your Faith, Folk and Family, even to your foes.

Whilst you are not obliged to tell every aspect of something to everyone on the roads, you should still be truthful. To lie is lowly, but to speak the truth is noble.

Well, that's the best explanation I can give at the minute for something that I felt was quite straightforward.

Truth, eh? I have experienced there are alot of variations of the word, "truth". There's a individual truth for every person, mostly.

I have a saying, which goes like this:
"Ćg sei d ćg mene, ĺ ćg meine d ćg sei", which means: "I say what I mean, and mean what I say"

To be honest to everyone is indeed a noble virtue, as it may also be something negative. It all depends on the situation.

But the point is that if you are honest, and tell the truth at all times, you will feel better than lying all the time. Telling the truth at all times, takes alot of courage(Which intertwine with the past discussion about courage) And every person I see, who tell the truth, even though it means that that person put himself/herself in a bad situation, get respect from. That's honor, to tell the truth.

Truth is very important to me but i must say i was not always the best at telling the truth not at all i would lie about stupid stuff and not realise why.One other thing its way way too much work to lie you gotta keep covering up more and more. There are way too many fake two faced people in this world so trusting anyone takes a long long time with me.
