    http://www.dumblaws.com/

The largest collection of stupid laws available anywhere. Some of the strange laws that are still on the books will amaze you!

Do you know of any dumb/senseless laws in your area or any other part of the world? Please share.

Good site but it is missing some real dumb laws some of which are local. One for example in Memphis (I believe) is that if a woman is driving a car not only does she have a lower speed limit but a man must walk in front of her yelling for everyone to look out because a woman is driving. As well in Tennessee, Georgia and other states it is illegal to have an ice-cream cone in your rear pocket on a Sunday (apparently they were used in horse thieving). All of these laws are a perfect example as to why all laws with the exception of those concerning violent crimes should be set to time limits. When the limit expires then the law can be voted on once again if they are good laws they will pass again if not they will pass away into history. Most of these dumb laws are not enforced today thankfully…but some are especially those connected to prohibitions which began in the reign of FDR. Many of these laws are on the books only because they do not expire. If they did the chances of them being reinstated would be slim at best.

Here are some I've come across:

In Baltimore, Maryland, it is not legal to take a lion to the movies.
In Staten Island, New York, You may only water your lawn if the hose is held in your hand.
In Oxford, Ohio, it is unlawful for a woman to appear in public while unshaven. This includes legs and face.
In Topeka, Kansas, servers are forbidden to serve wine in teacups.
In the fine state of Nebraska, it is not legal for a tavern owner to serve beer unless a nice kettle of soup is also brewing.
In Riverside, California, kissing on the lips, unless both parties wipe their lips with carbonized rose water, is against the local health ordinance. (Someone needed to be kissed!)
In Ocean City New York, It is illegal for men to go topless in the center of town.
An Illinois state law requires that a man's female companion shall call him "master" while out on a date. The law does not apply to married couples.
In Los Angeles, California, it is not legal to bathe two babies at the same time in the same tub.
In Carmel, New York, a man cannot be seen in public while wearing a jacket and pants that do not match.

I don't see why a law that requires all public buildings to have doors and windows that open outwards is anything dumb or absurd other than the fact that it could not stand alone as a rule of construction.

Let me tell you about one old outdated law that many would consider dumb but which I consider brilliant. In Kennesaw Georgia there is still a law on the books that every household must have at least one Gun in it.

About the only gun law I'd like.

My English friend told me once of a law that states it is legal to shoot Welshmen within the city walls of Chester after midnight with a bow and arrow?

In Virginia it is illegal to hunt on Sunday, to give the animals a day of rest. (Of course deer never rest--they're busy causing traffic accidents all the time).

That one actually has a reason, in case of a fire and everyone rushing to the exits, it is much easier to open the door outwards, whereas if everyone is pushing against eachother in a mob it is hard to open the door inwards towards you if the entire mob behind you is shoving you into the door. You want the force of the mob pushing you in the direction the door opens, not trying to open the door against the force of the mob

Knew that site before, or a similar one - but that was years ago.
So many are new to me

But to be honest - not all are dumb - some are very good like those:

    France:

"Between the hours of 8AM and 8PM, 70% of music on the radio must be by French artists."

I think it should be like that in every country to fight against the Anglicising/Mixing of the Language. Way to go France!

or here a law of my country - germany - i can't understand why it's dumb, it's really good:

    Germany

"Every office must have a view of the sky, however small."

What's bad about it? I think people work better anyway when they have a window and see something calm.

    Gruß,
    Boche
