Looking for Info about Northern Italy's Ancient Religions

I'm interested in finding serious information about the religions practiced in Northern italy before the roman conquest. I'm interested either in the religions of the modern italian side of the alpine arc or in the religion practiced by the gallic tribes of the Po valley, as well as by the ones of the venetian side. As a subject it is still rather overlooked by modern storiography and archeology, since such disciplines are heavily influenced by the past italian nationalistic views that exalted the role of Rome and seriously downplayed the role of other civilizations that had existed before.

Re: Northern Italy's ancient religions - info wanted

If you're looking for information about Germanic religion practiced in that area before the Roman Conquest (which would be completely fascinating, I think), then you've come to the right place, and hopefully someone will be able to help you.

If, however, you're not looking for specifically Germanic religion in what is now Northern Italy from pre-Roman times, then I think you'd get better success at some other forum, though I'm not entirely certain which. Perhaps other memebrs might be better able to diect you in that regard.

the non-romanized alpine people problobly practiced something very similiar to the gaulish celts as they were neighboring and living in that area, as for the venetian side I couldn't tell you anything about that

Re: Northern Italy's ancient religions - info wanted

The area was not Germanic until Rome fell.
We're looking at a largely Celticised Ligurian/Italic/Illyric population with some Etruscan influence before Rome comes along. But I'm not entirely sure if we do even know who was there before the Gauls came over. Does anyone know any better?
What of the archaeological evidence in the region? That'd be the best place to look. I believe we'd be dealing with the remnants of the Villanovan archaeological culture, no?

It was I think only pseudo-Esotericists like Guido von List who believed 'Wotan' worship originated in what was the Austria region; Vienna/Wien was some ancient Wotanist holy city to him. So that might be the origin of the faux historology of ancient Germanic alpinism.
