    Lightbulb Up Helly Aa Festival!

The annual Up Helly Aa festival has reached its climax with the burning of a Viking galley on Shetland.

Events in Lerwick began early on Tuesday with the Guizer Jarl leading 55 men of the Jarl Squad down the streets of the town, cheered on by crowds.

The festival, which began in the 19th Century, allows locals and tourists alike to celebrate the Viking heritage of the islands.

Up Helly Aa has been dubbed the world's most magnificent fire festival.

A procession of 900 guizers, many dressed as Vikings, marched through the streets of the town.

The procession culminated with the burning of a Viking galley, this year named Pete's Dragon, which was built especially for the occasion.

After the galley has been burnt, a series of performances take place in 11 local halls in Lerwick with squads visiting each hall to take part in the dancing and festivities.

Up Helly Aa is descended from the ancient festival of Yule, which the Vikings held to celebrate the rebirth of the sun.

    Re: Up Helly Aa!

Nice tradition! It is very much of the 19th century in its fantastic representation. But I think as long as one understands this not to be historical reenactment, but a joyous festivity embodying the spirit of the heroic age, by all means, let the wings and horns and chrome abound!

'Up Helly Aa'= on holy river? Any ideas about the etymology of this phrase, Theudanaz? Could 'guizer' be related to Dutch 'watergeuzen' ie sea-beggars, pirates? Just a thought.

    Vikings Ready for Fire Festival

    Vikings ready for fire festival

The usually dark winter skies above Shetland are to be lit up with colour for the Up-Helly-Aa fire festival.

Bearded Vikings wielding swords will be taking to the streets of Lerwick on Tuesday evening before burning their replica galley.

The annual celebration of Shetland culture culminates with 1,000 guizers - including men in Viking outfits - hurling torches into a longship.

Despite its Viking theme, the festival dates back to the late 19th Century.

Vikings weren't necessarily bearded, they often were clean shaven with medium-length bowl haircuts. They dyed their hair blond with lye.

Yeah blonde hair is a myth. Europeans have always looked like Turks and Arabs.

They highlighted and dyed their hair with lye, I wasn't implying they weren't also naturally blond.

Like Magnus Samualsson. A Swedish farmer.

Nb. The last fire festival I went to my friends couldn't decide wether to throw me on the fireboat or in the river. Fortunately no one can over power me.

Is their a main one to attend? I always hear about the one at Lerwick?

But apparantly this is the only one where the ship isn't sent seawards?
