Pushkin's mother's grandfather was Abram Petrovich Gannibal, a Paris-educated African slave who entered into the ranks of the Russian nobility and even served as governor of Reval.
If anyone's wondering about his looks.

Nevertheless, he has often been considered Russia's greatest poet and the founder of modern Russian literature:

"On his father's side he was descended from an ancient noble family and on his mother's side he was a great-great-grandson of a black Abyssinian, Gannibal, who served under Peter the Great. Pushkin himself had black hair and swarthly complexion."

Because such a mixture was still almost unknown and thus incredibly exotic, this part of Aleksandr Sergeich's ancestry was always uppermost on anyone's mind on meeting him, as this reputation preceded him, and naturally portraitists were not immune from this trend. Looking at many paintings of him [and I dare say that many are paintings OF other paintings, exaggerating the already caricatured aspects!] is thus not an ideal way to do physical anthropology in this case.

I'm not saying the octoroon's 1/8 was not visible in his face, but I'd be wary of any romanticist descriptions of him, especially ones attributing his creative genius to this quarter. The aspect of his upbringing probably more worth stressing in that regard would be his gifted peasant Nanny ... what was her name? Something E..... Rodionovna. Afina?

    EDIT: Arina! [Spasibo, GG!]

I read a good paper in Russia once saying that artists of the period always drew the same faces, but identified an individual by his Orders, Medals and Livery, as though that was all that was relevant!

This forgery of physical attributes and features has probably been common all over Europe. If you take a look at the portrays made of Swedish kings and rulers through history, few look like they could have been actual humans. Instead they were painted according to the physical attributes that were "in fashion" in their time (big eyes, steep and high forehead for example), making some of them look like something out of a sci-fi cartoon.
